Alan Grayson Ties Tea Party to KKK (Updated)

Alan Grayson Ties Tea Party to KKK (Updated)

Updated 1:11 p.m. | Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Fla., an outspoken liberal, is taking heat from Republicans for raising money off an email that associates the tea party with the Ku Klux Klan.

On Monday, a Grayson fundraising email sent to supporters features an image of two KKK members in full regalia looking at a flaming cross, which is used as the “T” in tea party. “Now You Know What the ‘T’ Stands For,” reads a title under the image.

Grayson goes on to write that, “At this point, the tea party is no more popular than the Klan.”

The Florida Democrat was known for insulting Republicans during his first term in Congress, which ended in 2010. He came back to Congress via Florida’s 9th District in 2012. But more recently on Capitol Hill, Grayson earned plaudits for changing his style to work with his counterparts across the aisle.

Republicans have called on House Democrats to condemn the imagery Grayson used in the email.

“There’s no excuse for the hateful words and imagery used by Congressman Grayson,” NRCC spokesman Matt Gorman said in a statement. “House Democrats should swiftly and strongly condemn him and return the money he has raised for them. This hate-filled rhetoric has Americans fed up with Washington.

Florida’s 9th District is rated a Safe Democrat contest by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call. President Barack Obama carried the district by a 23-point margin in 2012.

Updated 1:11 p.m. | In response to a whether he thought the fundraising email went too far, Grayson said in a statement that the tea party has used a host of insensitive and racially charged names and imagery to depict Democrats, including President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.

“Tea Party members have circulated countless altered pictures depicting President Obama and the First Lady as monkeys. Tea Party members also called my fellow Member of Congress, civil rights hero John Lewis, a ‘n***ger,’ and Rep. Barney Frank a ‘faggot,’” Grayson wrote verbatim in a written statement. He continued, “One could go on and on, because there is overwhelming evidence that the Tea Party is the home of bigotry and discrimination in America today, just as the KKK was for an earlier generation. If the shoe fits, wear it.”

        • candolf

How about a reality – 2013 lesson. The Tea Party is filled with Racists. Everybody knows – I wouldn’t bother lying.

        • EWS

Um you left out the Rpublican southern strategy and the fact that most dixiecrats are the Republican party of today. Yes Dems used to be the KKK now the Repukes are doing it even better !!!

          • Speichera

Mythology. The Dixiecrats lasted for a few months n 1948. Only one prominent Southern Democrat became a Republican during the Civil Rights era: Strom Thurmond. That’s it. The rest remained in your party, including KKK Exalted Cyclops Robert Byrd who was a Democrat Senator until his death in 2010. In fact you Democrats founded the KKK, opposed every single piece of civil rights legislation up until 1968 and opposed the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. Every villain of the Civil Rights era–Maddox, Faubus, Connor, etc., etc.–was a Democrat. Like you. Heck, Bull Connor served for years on the Democratic National Committee, until his death in 1973. Southern strategy? Really, that’s the best you can come up with? You Democrats need to stop the projection. Own your own miserable Civil Rights legacy and, frankly, apologize to the African American community.

          • EWS

Hey mr projector please go back to history class. Google Lee Atwater and maybe then you will get a clue. You are the party of hatred now. Hatred of poor people, hatred of brown people. I don’t see any democrats demonstrating with a confederate flag in front of the White House where the first black family presides. Your projection shows your lies and cowardice.

          • EWS

We passed the civil rights act in 1964. Johnson was a Texas democrat and yes he pissed off all the racists and they joined your party.

      • Jimni27

A party that wants to keep it’s people dependent on government are the real racists, and you know this to be true.

        • EWS

And you want the working poor and middle class to be slaves of the 1%. Spare me the dependence bs. Go cash your ssi check.

          • Jimni27

Yawn…. same meme different day. Open your eyes.

          • candolf

you tend to overuse the “yawn” line … new material would be great. FYI.

          • Jimni27

I used it once that I see. Again, have anything useful to share besides trying to be snarky or insulting? This whole 1% crap is straight out of the DNC talking points and is past boring. You repeat it like good little sheep knowing that Obama and the DNC are backed by one percenters themselves. The party of Hypocricy continues….

      • Kirk

        Ha, Teabillies, perfect
All one has to do for proof is to look at the photos/videos of their White Wing baggers rallies, just as Grayson says, plus the confederate flag everywhere.
The only things missing are the hoods and burning crosses,
They were probably told to keep those for their private rallies

    • TruNYC

Thanks so much.. Now I know where to send my donation and a THANK YOU!!!

  • IrishFast

If the white hood fits, wear it.

    • Speichera

Right. It’s just that you Democrats founded the KKK. So, that doesn’t make sense. They’re your people. Own your history. Be proud of it. Next.

      • CJR

Do you REALLY think the KKK would vote for Barack Obama?
        REALLY!?!
What happened a century ago is a LOT less important than what happened 50 years ago (the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act), then what happened 45 years ago (the Dixiecrats splitting off from the Democrats) and what happened 40 years ago (Nixon’s Southern Strategy, Lee Atwater, and the mass defection of Southern Democrats to the GOP.)
By the way, what color are the states of the old Confederacy?
        Red, aren’t they?

      • Krotch ScroteGuzzle

Some of the founding fathers owned slaves and didn’t let women vote. So are we all racists misogynists now?

  • JavierDCH12

Does he remember which party he’s part of? Yeah, the racist Democratic party of the dark & sad times of segregation (racism etc.) .. and slavery… . Makes no sense at all

    • F Michael Addams

Oh look..a history scholar..Listen kid..That lame cannard would be laughed out of most fifth grades..pathetic

      • Speichera

Actually, it’s pretty much true. I mean, look at who owned slaves. Which presidents kept slaves in the White House? You have to admit they were mostly Democrats, like you. I mean, that’s just indisputable historical fact. You may not like it, but it is your party’s history. Own it.

        • Kirk

The operative word being “history” as in “then” as opposed to the word “recent” as in Southern Strategy”

        • F Michael Addams

Don’t be ashamed of yer’ slave heritage..clasp it to yer’ bosom, buddy..Hold the rebel rag high..!

      • Kirk

Don’t be too hard on him, Michael
Is after all only 12. His Christian home history schooling doesn’t include anything about The Southern Strategy

  • candolf

Have you ever thought to consider, for even 1 moment, that there is some truth to what Mr. Grayson is saying? Just do a simple “google image” search for, oh heck, I don’t know – “Tea Party racist” …

    • Jimni27

You can find just as many examples of racism on the left. It doesn’t mean all democrats are racist. This meme has to stop. It’s not only true, it is dividing this nation even further thanks to our President. These are for the most part people who want government to take a lesser role. That’s it. Your mainstream media and democratic politicians are trying to denounce the tea party because they know their message is a strong one.
Come on- THINK. Ted Cruz is the only politician in Washington who really made a lot of noise about Obamacare- a law that is really proving day by day to be a clusterf#*% , and people from both sides realizing it. So the DNC and the media have to stop him, right? This is a man who independents and libertarians should be taking notice of, and it scares them to death.

      • F Michael Addams

Relax brother…Let the lies and pretensions slip away…Feel the weight and tension of hidin’ yer true heart, slip from yer neck..Let the hood fall over yer’ eyes..Grab yer’ rebel flag and go forth proudly…it’s yer’ heritage bro’..own it..

        • Jimni27

The fact that there isn’t a Democrat on the internet that’s is willing to have a civil conversation about the tea party or race just goes to show you are scared for your party’s future. The media may have a very few low info voters fooled but people are waking up.

          • Brown

Of course some are racist but he’s stereotyping a group of people which I thought was a no no to liberals.

Grayson is an ignorant fool. Has likely never heard of the “Klanbake” and knows nothing of his own party’s history (or maybe he does and he’s just a liar). The Klan of reconstruction and the 1920s, 30s and 40s Klan was a Democratic party and progressive institution.

    • Z_West

Most southern racists today however generally swing to the right.

And the so-called “southern strategy” is just another myth, the left created to villify the right. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/10/magazine/10Section2b.t-4.html?_r=0

as you, if only they understood that the voter suppression laws newly enacted in The South were for their own good. Are you history teacher?

      • Speichera

Again, your Democrat party founded the KKK. Bull Connor was one of yours. KKK Exalted Cyclops Robert Byrd, who you people kept in the Senate until 2010, was a Democrat. Like you. Trust me, projection is not pretty. Next.

        • Z_West

Again… If you’re still mad about Byrd…blame West Virginia.

I’ll agree that, Southern Conservatives are a blight on progress… That’s for sure. Be they republicans, tea partiers, tea baggers, libertarians, angry ,old and white, independents…or whatever they call themselves these days. It’s all the same in end. A zealous cabal of reactionary, single issues voters, living in partisan protected districts.

        • Michele Mayes-Gerra

Okay, The Democratic Party founded the KKK. Then we had a change and a break off during the civil rights movement. The whole Southern Strategy thing and those Dems moving out of the Dem party. We can all accept history. However, what about now? Right NOW? You can deflect with but your party was the original KKK, that doesnt change the fact that the Rep party took on those good ole southern boys back then and turned themselves into a modern KKK today. It doesnt erase the fact that it isnt Dem Rallies outside the White house fyling the Confederate Flag. THAT would be the Tea Party folks. We can play who was the worst child all day… It doesnt change who is the bad adult today. Or 50, 60, and 100 year old stuff the best you have to defend todays actions?

    • Krotch ScroteGuzzle

So essentially Congressman Grayson is saying the Klu Klux Klan is three times as popular as the United States Congress, of which he’s a proud member..

I’d say it’s time to clean House, Grayson might be a good place to start- along with Boehner, the Wicked Witch of the West and a couple hundred more.. I think 5 or 6 of the 33 Senators up for re-election are worth saving

3 X 9.2 = 27.6 which is less than 30 is it not? That Means TEA’s approval rating is more than 3 times higher than is Congress’s approval rating does it not?

One of the biggest problems that the TEA Party has–and there was no getting away from it–was that while it started as a movement to reform government spending, and was a knee jerk backlash to the huge but necessary bailouts of 2009, it attracted every caustic, paranoid wing nut out of the far right fringe to their anti-Obama message like an electromagnet.

I know many people who identify with the Tea Party, and one who is actively involved in Tea Party local politics. None of them are racist. They’re very libertarian.

That said, many of these “patriot militias” have evolved out of the old KKK. This was a conscious decision to distance themselves from a tarnished image of hoods and burning crosses–at least five here in Texas according to the History Channel. (There’s a lot the History Channel does that’s utter crap, but occasionally they do a show that’s a real gem. This was one.) I would be willing to bet that almost all of those “patriot militias” identify with the Tea Party as it stands now. So the reactionary right and the Tea Party is less about finding solutions to our long term debt, and has become what it attracted to itself. That’s why we see morons flying confederate flags outside the White House at Tea Party rallies, and hear them spew truly mind bending, paranoid rhetoric.

    • F Michael Addams

No need to draw a veil of fake libertarianism over yer’ truest nature..feel at home with yer’ fear of the dark skinned ones..No need to call them moochers and takers..use the language ya’ think no one knows ya’ do…Who are ya’ foolin’…yer’self..?

dropped anchor among the Tea Party, then where are they? If you
genuinely felt that a foreign-born African was taking over the country
and turning it over to anarchists, feminists, illegals, welfare cheats
and gays who wanted to come and take all your guns away (I live in a
rural Appalachian district – they ALL say that very thing in private, only worse), which party would YOU be more comfortable with?

Republicans incorporated the George Wallace wing of the Democratic party in 1972—Lee Atwater expressed that very succinctly in his explanation of the Southern Strategy. The dixie-crat wing of the Democratic party left in protest during the 1968 convention over the civil rights and voting rights acts. George Wallace made two runs for President, but most of the old racists migrated to the Republican party in 1972, and the northern liberal wing of the GOP finally died out in the 1990′s and 2000′s, Lincoln Chafee being the last one standing, unless you count Susan Collins and Olympia Snow from Maine.

segregationist democrats steadily left the party as it began to integrate and embrace civil rights. almost all of them became republicans, and lee atwater started to coach the gop on how to say ‘n—-r’ without actually saying ‘n—-r’. do you know what the words ‘fact’ and ‘subject’ mean?

          • garry lafferty

Let us set aside every other sin of the radical right, which we could justly denounce them for.

In an UNPRECEDENTED act, the baggers have directly threatened to default on the national debt and cause economic catastrophe if their demands aren’t met.

For the first time in our history, a major political party has threatened the financial HEART and the very economic LIFE of their own country.

Nothing excuses that. Nothing can mitigate it.

The bagger doctrine of “fundamental transformation” is a declaration of WAR on our democratic system.

They do not oppose majority policies in an acceptable, democratic fashion with suggestions or alternatives worthy of consideration or debate.

No, it is their intention to SABOTAGE government from this point forward–unless it bows to their every DEMAND–in effect, making majority rule IMPOSSIBLE–by means of shutdowns, the dissemination of endless lies and misinformation, and the deliberate creation of chaos and fear, thus undermining faith in responsible, democratic government.

Let us call this what it is–fascism.

Utterly unmasked FASCISM has come to America.

The baggers are a far greater threat to the national security than any external enemy has ever been, and they pose the gravest danger to the continuation of our “democratic experiment” that this country has known since the Civil War.

    They are the ENEMY WITHIN.

And our very survival as a FREE society depends upon their complete DEFEAT.

    • F Michael Addams

Well..we can all be thankful that Teabillyism is a rather small crust in the big loaf..not sayin’ that the seditious bastards don’t bear watchin’..and given a good stompin’ as needed..but also..it wouldn’t hurt if a lot more sane folks actually turned up ta’ vote in the ” off years”..

      • billbear1961

I think we’ve really got to take them seriously. They’re fanatics who’ll stop at nothing to get what they want! The coup attempt was PROOF of that! It was truly a wake-up call!

Yes, people MUST vote IF they can manage to get into a voting booth, because, as you know, the radical right intends to suppress the vote in a way we haven’t seen since before the Voting Rights Act (now gutted by the SCOTUS Fascist Five!).

Something must finally be done to counter their 24/7 propaganda machine. REAL journalists must begin to hold them accountable in a BIG way, which cannot be ignored or dismissed, for their endless lies and misinformation, and stop treating propagandists as though they were somehow respectable colleagues!

The game of false equivalencies must STOP–blaming both sides equally for the mess we’re in when one side has clearly gone utterly off the DEEP END! Journalists who CARE about democracy must denounce fascist obstruction for the CRIME it is, while we still have a democracy to protect!

The endless corporate-fascist propaganda has polluted this country’s airwaves and lobotomized its political discourse long ENOUGH since they destroyed the Fairness Doctrine (which should be restored!) some 30 years ago!

It has jerked the political center so far right that the U.S. has the ONLY “conservative” party in the industrialized democratic world insanely opposed to universal health insurance, a RIGHT enjoyed by every other advanced democracy in this world for the past half CENTURY, or longer!

Its spread and vicious, society-destroying influence led directly to the coup attempt we recently endured!

We must take this fascist threat–and every angle from which it strikes at the heart of our democracy–VERY seriously!

Or their NEXT attempt to bend us to their tyrannical will may succeed!!

OR they may carry through with their threat to DESTROY what they cannot control!!

    • garry lafferty

Look up Prescott Bush Him and Hitler were tight. Bush even got a award from Hitler. Regan Bush called it the new world order. Sub title would be freedom party in the 80s.. Today its called tea party . Just a different name same goal Fascist like Hitler. Corp. control government. Rap your self in flag was a example of Hitler’ Bush Fascism. anti union, anti mim wage etc. women second class. No middle class just wealthy and struggling working class.

  • Liberty: Coercion’s Absence

In fact, the notion that liberty means “freedom from obstacles” is often cited by central planners consolidating the power to coerce others.

    • F Michael Addams

Oh my..!..some fancy liburtee’ talk fer’ our educatin’…thanks fer’ that smar’taytion Gomer…That could even be like..one of them memes..!

    • billbear1961

We aren’t talking here about obstructing the will of central planners.

No, these fascists obstruct the Will of the PEOPLE–who rejected Romney and embraced President Obama’s vision, decisively!

The only time one may legitimately and constitutionally obstruct the Will of the People in a free society is if or when they seek to violate the equal protection of the laws for ALL members of society.

To refuse to do one’s constitutional DUTY to operate government and defend the validity of the U.S. public debt, thus threatening one’s own country’s very economic LIFE, in an effort to extort changes to the law of the land is an act of SEDITION.

Those guilty of this CRIME against our democratic republic should be arrested and tried, at once!

      • Liberty: Coercion’s Absence

In this article, communistic liberal democrat Peter Orszag openly wages ideological warfare against the ideas and institutions of the United States Constitution: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-06-19/voting-should-be-mandatory.html

        • billbear1961

They won’t post my long reply to you. I have no idea why!

Orszag talks about making voting mandatory, and speculates that constitutional changes may be necessary to make such a requirement legal.

You object to the fully legitimate process of amending the Constitution because ?????????

          • Liberty: Coercion’s Absence

I’m simply pointing out that Orszag’s ideology is hostile to the philosophy behind our Constitution.

          • billbear1961

A desire to amend the Constitution–which we’ve done quite a few times in our history–is an act of unacceptable “hostility” in your eyes, but threatening to DESTROY your own country’s economy if you don’t get what you want isn’t??

Boy, pal, I really have no idea what to say to you, except I think you’re in serious need of HELP.

          • garry lafferty

Voting will never be mandatory that’s made up. If that were true Republicans would never win again.

          • billbear1961

            Absolutely correct, Garry!

        • garry lafferty

          Jesus loves you too.

      • garry lafferty
