Bruce Braley’s Farmer Insult Hits Airwaves in New TV Ad

Energy Executive Mark Jacobs, an emerging candidate in a crowded GOP field for Iowa’s open Senate seat, debuted a new ad Friday attacking the de facto Democratic nominee, Rep. Bruce Braley, for recent comments he made about Iowa’s senior senator, Republican Charles E. Grassley.

The 30-second spot features Braley’s comments, which were taped at a fundraiser earlier this year in Texas. At that event, Braley said if Republicans win the Senate, “a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law,” would take the gavel on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The ad will air on cable in eastern Iowa, according to Jacobs’ campaign.

Iowa Republicans say Braley’s comments, which were released earlier this week by a Republican  research group, will make this Senate seat competitive.

After Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, announced his retirement last year, many political observers believed Democrats would hold the seat. Republicans struggled to recruit a top-flight candidate, and soon the field was filled with little-known GOP contenders.

But Braley’s comments have given Hawkeye State Republicans renewed optimism this race will become more competitive. Also, Republicans say Jacobs and state Sen. Joni Ernst are emerging as the top tier of Republican candidates among the five-candidate field. (Ernst made her own splash this week with an ad in which she touts her experience castrating hogs.)

Iowa’s open Senate seat is rated a Lean Democrat contest by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

Well if you say something stupid then it is going to be in a political ad.

  • SaoMagnifico

Awful gaffe by Bruce Braley. Dreadful ad from Mark Jacobs (who?).

  • Matt D.

While liberty’s resulting prosperity has stoked the competitive fires of some, it has also freed charlatans and quacks to conjure up the anti-liberty superstitions of collectivism.

  • ShadrachSmith

That is the stupidest thing anyone in Iowa politics has ever said.

    I mean…stupid.

  • Nick Scanlan

I honestly don’t see it as a huge gaffe, but we will see. He was talking about the JUDICIARY committee and saying that someone with no JUDICIARY experience would get that seat. Its only an insult to farmers if you want it to be.

  • Matt D.

Those who preach from collectivism’s altar declare that equality of wealth must be imposed in the interests of “society” and that the “rich” must pay their “fair” share.

  • JayfromBrooklyn

Calling the most popular politician in Iowa “a farmer from Iowa” is a major gaffe no matter the context.

That 47% of people are living off government benefits and thus have no incentive to vote for the party of less government is a fact, but it was a huge gaffe.

  • JayfromBrooklyn

Well that ad made it to Roll Call and now you have heard of Mark Jacobs, so I would call that a success.

  • Steve DeAngelo

The Jacob’s Ad highlights Braley’s attack on Iowa farmers in what you yourself have admitted is Braley’s “awful gaffe” so how could that be a dreadful ad?
