Abel Maldonado, a former California lieutenant governor, is launching his first television ad today in his challenge of Rep. Lois Capps (D).
The Republican is taking on Capps in the Santa Barbara-based 24th district, which was redrawn in redistricting last year as a far more competitive district for Capps. Maldonado uses his first ad to introduce himself to voters, highlight his business background and run against an unpopular Congress.
“I’m Abel Maldonado, a job-creator who helped build a successful, family-owned business,” he says in the ad. “And I approved this message because Washington needs people who know how to run small businesses, not ruin them.”
The ad begins running tonight throughout the district on cable and broadcast. It’s backed by almost $300,000, according to a source with knowledge of the buy.
Capps began running her first two ads of the general election in late July. They highlighted her years of representing the district and support for women’s rights issues.
This is one of a number of competitive districts in California this year. Roll Call currently rates the race as Leans Democratic.
