Hayden Rogers, Rep. Heath Shuler’s (D-N.C.) longtime chief of staff, is considering running for his boss’ seat now that Shuler has announced his retirement.

A source familiar with Rogers’ thinking told Roll Call that he has been approached about a run and is considering it. Full story

North Carolina: Heath Shuler Will Not Run for Re Election

Updated: 4:50 p.m. | Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) will not run for re-election this year.

The moderate Blue Dog Democrat decided against a bid in a redrawn 11th district, which was made substantially more Republican than his current district during a GOP-led redistricting process.

“Last week I spent a lot of time at home with my family discussing the possibility of running for governor of North Carolina,” Shuler, who decided against the statewide race, said in a statement. “This time of reflection and prayer gave us the opportunity to talk about the best course of action for us as a family moving forward. It was during this time that I reached the decision not to seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012.” Full story

North Carolina: Heath Shuler Decides Against Gubernatorial Bid

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), who seriously considered running for governor in the wake of Gov. Beverly Perdue’s retirement announcement last week, has decided not to seek the statewide office.

The Blue Dog Democrat, who faces an uphill re-election fight in a western North Carolina district that was made more Republican in redistricting, said in a statement he was honored to be discussed for the office.

“I will not be running for governor of North Carolina in 2012,” he said in a statement. “It is an honor to even be discussed as a potential candidate for such an esteemed office, but now is not my time.” Full story

North Carolina Democratic Bench Keeps Shuffling

Will the last endangered Democratic official in North Carolina please turn out the lights?

Rep. Brad Miller (D) announced his retirement this morning. Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue, facing the likely prospect of an epic defeat this November, announced her decision not to run for a second term this afternoon. Later, politically vulnerable Rep. Mike McIntyre (D) opened the door to running for governor of the Tar Heel State. And a local news report tonight said Rep. Heath Shuler (D) is eyeing a bid for governor as well. A Shuler spokeswoman had no comment. Full story
