Businessman Weston Wamp, a Republican, announced Monday that he will challenge two-term Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, R-Tenn., for a second time.

“America is too great for this Congress to continue to divide our nation and avoid their responsibilities,” Wamp said in a release. “I want to give the Third District an independent conservative voice and a reason to believe our government can still work and serve the people.”

Wamp, the son of former Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., challenged Fleischmann in 2012. He came in third in a three-way primary against Fleischmann and dairy magnate Scottie Mayfield.

Tennessee: Chuck Fleischmann Wins Primary

Republican Rep. Chuck Fleischmann won his contested primary tonight, dispatching dairy magnate Scottie Mayfield and 25-year-old Weston Wamp.

With 100 percent of precincts in the 3rd district reporting, Fleischmann got 39.1 percent to Mayfield’s 31 percent and Wamp’s 28.7 percent, according to the Associated Press.

The race presented some significant challenges for Fleischmann, a freshman. A lot of the redrawn seat was new turf to him, and both his opponents started with names that were familiar to voters. Mayfield was the longtime spokesman and CEO of a popular milk and ice cream company. Wamp is the son of former Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.), Fleischmann’s predecessor.

Tennessee: Weston Wamp Launches Last TV Ad

Congressional candidate Weston Wamp (R), the 25-year-old son of former Rep. Zach Wamp (R), went up on television with his final, unique ad.

Fleischmann succeeded the elder Wamp, who retired in 2010 to run for governor, and the new 3rd district includes much of the territory he used to represent.

Tennessee: Scottie Mayfield up Against Chuck Fleischman in Early Poll

In Tennessee’s 3rd district GOP primary, dairy magnate Scottie Mayfield led freshman Republican Rep. Chuck Fleischman and 25-year-old entrepreneur Weston Wamp in a survey conducted for Mayfield’s campaign.

In a poll of 400 likely Republican primary voters in the newly configured district, 34 percent said they’d vote for Mayfield; 25 percent for Wamp, the son of former Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.); and 25 percent for Fleischman. Seventeen percent of those surveyed were undecided.

All three candidates have relatively strong name identification in the district, making this a truly competitive primary. Full story
