Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) will not seek a House seat in Washington state this year after losing a primary to a fellow Democratic Member in March.

In an email to his supporters, Kucinich thanked the “tens of thousands of concerned Citizens for Kucinich who in the past few months have written, emailed and called to discuss my running for Congress in Washington State.”

“After careful consideration and discussions with Elizabeth and my closest friends, I have decided that, at this time, I can best serve from outside the Congress,” he continued.

Dennis Kucinich to Visit Washington State … Again

(Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call File Photo)

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) is heading back to Washington state next month, stoking speculation he might be considering a comeback bid on the West Coast.

Kucinich will address a forum on protecting Social Security at Highline Community College on April 12, according to the group Washington Citizens for Kucinich.

But this may not be just any cross-country speaking trip. Last year, Kucinich flirted with running for a new House seat in the Evergreen State before seeking re-election in a redrawn Ohio district against his longtime colleague, Rep. Marcy Kaptur.

Kaptur walloped Kucinich by a 14-point margin in the Democratic primary earlier this month. But since his defeat, the 65-year-old hasn’t exactly ruled out another run somewhere, at some point in time. Full story

Illinois: Super PAC Spent Big for Adam Kinzinger in Home Stretch

Illinois: Super PAC Spent Big for Adam Kinzinger in Home Stretch

Freshman Rep. Adam Kinzinger had some outside help in his victory over veteran Rep. Don Manzullo in Tuesday’s primary.

The Campaign for Primary Accountability, a super PAC, spent a whopping $222,000 on Kinzinger’s behalf late in the race. That’s more than four times as much as the $52,000 radio ad buy that YG Action Fund, a super PAC run by a former aide to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.), put into the race.

The six-figure sum is also more cash than the controversial, Texas-based super PAC has spent in any other race this cycle. Full story

Ohio: More Members Donated to Marcy Kaptur in Primarys Final Days

(Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call)

Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur got an influx of campaign cash from fellow House Democrats in the final days before her primary victory Tuesday over Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

Rep. John Olver (D-Mass.), a longtime appropriator who serves on the panel with Kaptur and is retiring this year, cut her a check for $2,000, according to Federal Election Commission reports. The political action committees of Reps. Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.) and Corrine Brown (D-Fla.) also gave $1,000 each to Kaptur.

Rep. Bennie Thompson’s (D-Miss.) SECURE PAC gave Kaptur $2,000 just a couple of days before the primary. Also, Rep. Dan Lipinski’s (D-Ill.) re-election campaign sent her $1,000 a day later, per online records. Full story

Updated: 12:35 a.m. | Rep. Marcy Kaptur defeated fellow Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich in a redistricting-forced primary tonight, capping the Congressional career of Cleveland’s one-time “Boy Mayor” and the House’s resident peace advocate.

Kaptur, the dean of the Ohio delegation, beat the two-time presidential candidate by a margin of 56 percent to 40 percent, according to results from the Associated Press.

Speaking by phone on MSNBC after midnight, Kaptur said she hadn’t yet spoken to Kucinich or gotten a concession from him. “We really haven’t had a chance to connect yet. But we will,” Kaptur said, adding that it had been “a very intense campaign.” Full story

Ohio: Members Send Late Money to Marcy Kaptur

(Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call)

Just days before Ohio Democratic Reps. Marcy Kaptur and Dennis Kucinich square off in a primary, two fellow Democrats, including Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.), picked sides.

Earlier this week, Rep. David Price’s (D-N.C.) re-election committee and Durbin’s Prairie political action committee each donated $1,000 to Kaptur. The Congresswoman also received a $1,000 check from Rep. Rosa DeLauro’s (D-Conn.) campaign at the start of this year, according to online fundraising records. Both Price and DeLauro serve with Kaptur on the Appropriations Committee. Durbin, also an appropriator, was first elected to the House in 1982, the same year as Kaptur.

Kucinich’s fundraising reports from this year did not show any transfers from his Congressional colleagues. However, the late Rep. Tom Lantos’ (D-Calif.) campaign committee donated $2,000 to Kucinich in early February. Full story

The Campaign for Primary Accountability aired its second advertisement targeting Rep. Marcy Kaptur in her Ohio primary against fellow Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

The super PAC’s spot quotes a recent Kaptur ad in which the veteran Congresswoman says she “lives in the same house I grew up in, this one right here.”

“After 30 years in Congress, Marcy Kaptur says one thing, does another,” an announcer says in the super PAC’s ad. “Actually, Marcy Kaptur lives in this fancy condo in the Washington, D.C., suburbs.” Full story

Morning Roundup: Member-Vs.-Member Races

Morning Roundup: Member Vs. Member Races

(Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call)

The front page of today’s Roll Call features Shira Toeplitz’s report from the ground in Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio, on the Democratic primary between Reps. Marcy Kaptur and Dennis Kucinich. Their March 6 contest will be the first of 12 Member-vs.-Member races decided this redistricting cycle.

The numbers in the redrawn 9th district, which stretches 120 miles along Lake Erie’s shoreline, favor Kaptur over Kucinich because it takes in more of her current territory. But, as Toeplitz points out, long odds have never stopped the two-time failed presidential candidate and one-time “boy mayor” of Cleveland from running before. Full story

CLEVELAND — Rep. Dennis Kucinich often refers to Rep. Marcy Kaptur as his friend on the campaign trail, but the Democratic duo appeared to be anything but comrades in their first debate.

FEC for Breakfast: Member-Vs.-Member Race Fundraising

At Roll Call, there’s no race like a Member-vs.-Member contest. Here’s the fundraising breakdown for these redistricting-forced battles, plus our picks for which Member won the money battle in the fourth quarter:

Democrats Vs. Democrats:

  • CA-30:  Rep. Howard Berman obliterated Rep. Brad Sherman by bringing in almost eight times his haul in the fourth quarter. Berman raised just more than $1 million, while Sherman raised just $126,000. Sherman still has more in his bank account with almost $3.7 million in cash on hand. But Berman is quickly catching up and now has close to $2.9 million in the bank. MONEY WINNER: Berman, by eight-fold.
  • CA-44: Rep. Laura Richardson raised more than Rep. Janice Hahn in the fourth quarter, bringing in $103,00 compared with the newly elected Congresswoman’s $77,000. Richardson had more in the bank, too, with $132,00 in cash on hand. Hahn reported $76,00 in cash on hand. MONEY WINNER: Richardson, by a little.   Full story
