Connecticut: House and Senate Primaries on Tap

The Connecticut Senate race may turn out to be more interesting than expected in the fall. But for today’s primary contests, all of the excitement is in the 5th district.

This seat’s Democratic primary has pitted EMILY’s List, base liberals and President Bill Clinton against each other, and the outcome is not clear. There is similar uncertainty in the GOP race. Both have become increasingly nasty as the summer progressed. The fall outcome could ride on whom the parties nominate.

As for that Senate race, former WWE CEO Linda McMahon is expected to handily defeat former Rep. Christopher Shays in the state’s Senate GOP primary. Likewise, Rep. Christopher Murphy is expected to coast to the nomination on the Democratic side.

Connecticut’s 5th District

The Democratic primary to replace Rep. Christopher Murphy (D), who is running for Senate, has been one of the wildest races of the cycle.

The early frontrunner, state Speaker Chris Donovan, was coasting to the nomination until his campaign went into turmoil in June when two staffers were indicted for alleged campaign finance violations. Donovan has continually denied any knowledge of the matter.

That development gave his two competitors an opening. Former state Rep. Elizabeth Esty seemed at first to benefit the most. She has an organized campaign and the backing of EMILY’s List. That rivalry has set off a proxy fight between EMILY’s List and liberals who are doubling down on Donovan.

Meanwhile, political newcomer Dan Roberti had a low profile for most of the campaign. But in recent weeks, super PAC money has come to his aid through television ads, and he has aired negative spots against Esty and Donovan. On Monday, Roberti was endorsed by President Bill Clinton.

It is hard to tell who has the edge in this race.

The Republican primary has unfolded similarly.

Democrats are most afraid of state Sen. Andrew Roraback. He is a moderate and well-liked. It is for that reason he is perceived as the most dangerous Republican candidate in the context of ethics dominating the Democratic Party’s primary.

But the Republican primary has had ethical issues surface as well.  Businesswoman Lisa Wilson-Foley’s self-funded effort has come under scrutiny, and Democrats are hopeful that she will win the Republican primary. Businessman Mark Greenberg and 2010 candidate Justin Bernier are also in the hunt for the GOP nod.

Much rides on which nominees emerge from both parties. With ethics issues hanging over Donovan and Wilson-Foley, certain matchups will strongly influence each party’s chances in the fall.

Connecticut Senate

Most Connecticut politicos have long declared Rep. Christopher Murphy as the frontrunner over former Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz.

With the exception of EMILY’s List, most of the national Democratic establishment has made it known that Murphy is its preferred candidate. Some on the ground say  Bysiewicz has a record of getting out the vote and should not be underestimated. But on primary day, this is Murphy’s race to lose.

In the Republican primary, former WWE CEO Linda McMahon is making her second run for Senate and former Rep. Christopher Shays is attempting his political comeback.

It has been a bitter fight that McMahon is expected to win. She picked up the state party’s endorsement in May. Shays has fought hard, but he has not been able to keep up with McMahon’s self-funded financial effort.

National Republicans wrote off this seat last fall, but they have recently changed their posture, praising McMahon’s campaign execution.

DSCC Attacks Todd Akin in New Ad

The independent expenditure arm of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee began airing an attack ad this weekend against Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP nominee for Senate in Missouri.

Saying he would “undermine Social Security,” the spot attacks Akin with his own words. Democrats are hoping to frame Akin as too extreme for Missouri voters. They hope swing voters will instead cast their ballots for vulnerable first-term Sen. Claire McCaskill (D).

Rep. Mazie Hirono easily won her Democratic Senate primary Saturday, and Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard scored an upset victory in the Democratic primary to replace Hirono in the House.

Congressional seats aren’t vacated often in heavily Democratic Hawaii.

So a scrum ensued within the party when two opened up last year, and is set to culminate Saturday when the Democratic nominees for the open Senate seat and 2nd district House seat are decided. In a year when homegrown President Barack Obama leads the ticket, the winners of the Democratic primaries will be especially favored to win in November. Full story

Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) released a new poll today showing he remains in a dead heat with state Treasurer Richard Mourdock in the Hoosier State’s open Senate race.

Donnelly received 41 percent to Mourdock’s 40 percent in the survey obtained by Roll Call and paid for by the Democrat’s campaign.

The survey shows Democrats believe the race remains competitive several months after Mourdock defeated six-term Sen. Dick Lugar for the Republican nomination in May. Roll Call rates the Indiana Senate race as Leans Republican. Full story

Democrats received some good news tonight, as former Microsoft executive Suzan DelBene (D) advanced to the general election in the top-two primary for Washington state’s open 1st district.

DelBene, who self-funded her primary campaign, will have the early edge in the general election against Snohomish County Councilman John Koster (R).

The Associated Press called the race with 41 percent of precincts reporting. Koster led with 44 percent, followed by DelBene with 23 percent. Behind them were three Democrats: former Microsoft manager Darcy Burner with 15 percent, former state Rep. Laura Ruderman with 7 percent and state Sen. Steve Hobbs with 7 percent.

Koster and DelBene are both looking to win after defeats in different Congressional districts in 2010. Koster lost to Rep. Rick Larsen (D) in the 2nd district, and DelBene lost to Rep. Dave Reichert (R) in the 8th district. Full story

Updated: 12:06 a.m. | Michigan Rep. John Conyers held off a crowded field in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, paving the way for the second-longest-serving House Member to cruise to a 25th term in November.

Conyers had 54 percent of the vote in the 13th district against a field of challengers that included state Sen. Glenn Anderson, with 86 percent of precincts reporting. Anderson was in second place with 19 percent.

As a result of redistricting, Conyers sought re-election in a Detroit district of mostly new turf for him, including some suburbs in the western part.

The victory of Conyers, 83, means he will serve for a 25th term in this heavily Democratic district. Conyers is second in seniority behind fellow Michigan Democratic Rep. John Dingell, who is the dean of the House and now serving in his 29th term. Full story

Rep. Todd Akin won a tightly contested GOP primary for Senate today and advances to face vulnerable Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) in November.

The six-term conservative Member beat out businessman John Brunner and former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman for the Senate nomination. Akin had 36 percent of the vote, with 74 percent of precincts reporting. Brunner and Steelman followed and were separated by less than 1 point.

In Akin, Democrats get the nominee they hoped to face — in fact the party played some part in pushing him to victory. Full story

Michigan: Rick Santorum Endorses Pete Hoekstra in Senate Race

Michigan: Rick Santorum Endorses Pete Hoekstra in Senate Race

(Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call File Photo)

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) on Wednesday backed former Rep. Pete Hoekstra in his bid against Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D).

Santorum’s endorsement comes a few days before Michigan’s Republican Senate primary, which is set for Tuesday. Hoekstra’s main competition in that race is charter schools executive Clark Durant. Republicans expect Hoekstra to win the nomination, but Durant has garnered endorsements from several nationally recognized conservatives, including Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).

“It is clear that the people of Michigan have tremendous choices in the Republican primary that [would all] be superior to Debbie Stabenow, but there is only one candidate with a proven track record of conservative leadership,” Santorum said. “That is Congressman Pete Hoekstra.”

The winner of the GOP primary has a tough battle ahead. Roll Call rates this Senate race as Likely Democratic.

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (Wash.) expressed confidence in her party’s ability to hold the majority this fall, but also bemoaned the influence of outside of money in Senate campaigns.

“Despite the difficult and very tough map and despite the fact that everybody wrote off our chances when I took on this task almost two years ago, we are doing really great and I feel confident going into the election,” Murray told reporters this morning. “The only thing that stands between me and a long good night of sleep is the outside money that is coming from Karl Rove and the right-wing billionaires that are funding these races and campaigns across the country.”

Texas: Ted Cruz Defeats David Dewhurst

Texas: Ted Cruz Defeats David Dewhurst

(Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call File Photo

Updated 9:43 p.m. | Former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz, a virtual political unknown only a year ago, has shocked the Texas political system and defeated Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the GOP primary to replace retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, according to the Associated Press.

Cruz had 53.6 percent of the vote to Dewhurst’s 46.4 percent at the time the AP called the race, with just 22.5 percent of precincts reporting. Although that result was widely anticipated in the final days of the campaign, it cannot be emphasized enough how much of a stunning development this is.

Texas is not akin to GOP Sen. Dick Lugar’s loss in Indiana or in states where a tea party insurgent knocked off a party favorite in 2010.

The media market is one of the most expensive in the country, and the money needed to travel the geographic expanse sets the Lone Star State apart from other states. And yet, Cruz and his coalition of national tea party figures and groups such as the Club for Growth and Sen. Jim DeMint’s (R-S.C.) Senate Conservatives Fund beat the odds.

Nearly every GOP state Senator and Gov. Rick Perry (R) backed Dewhurst. Perry campaigned vigorously on his behalf. Republicans in the state disagree over whether Perry’s failed effort for Dewhurst will show weakness.

Cruz is all but assured he will be elected to the Senate in the fall.

Updated 9:43 p.m.

Sen. John Cornyn (Texas), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, praised Cruz in a press release shortly after the race was called.

“Ted believes, as I do, that we need to make Washington DC look a little more like the great state of Texas, and that starts with restoring common-sense, conservative values in our nation’s Capital,” he said.

“With a strong, hard-working ally in Ted Cruz, we will work to pass a balanced budget amendment, remove the federal government’s boot off the neck of our small businesses, and repeal-and-replace ObamaCare,” he added.

Chris Chocola, president of the Club for Growth, said in a press release that Cruz “clearly articulated the pro-growth message that Republican voters across the country have responded to.”

The Club for Growth PAC spent more than $5.5 million in independent expenditures on the campaign, according to the release.

New Mexico: DSCC Targets Wilson in TV Ad

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee slammed the voting record of former Rep. Heather Wilson (R) in its first TV ad in the New Mexico Senate race.

The spot, launched today, accuses Wilson of supporting corporate tax breaks that helped to send jobs to China and India. Wilson faces Rep. Martin Heinrich (D) in a competitive race to replace retiring Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D). Full story

Texas: Dueling Final Polls in Senate Runoff

Texas: Dueling Final Polls in Senate Runoff

Supporters of Ted Cruz remained confident heading into Tuesday's Texas Senate runoff. (Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call File Photo)

Come Wednesday morning, at least one pollster will have some explaining to do about final numbers heading into Tuesday’s Texas Senate runoff.  That’s because the last surveys released over the weekend showed both Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz ahead.

A Dewhurst poll conducted last week showed him ahead of Cruz by 5 points. Then Public Policy Polling, a Democratic polling firm, released an automated survey that showed Cruz up by 10 points.

Cruz has steadily built momentum since the late May primary, and most observers of the race believe he will win — probably by a comfortable margin. Sources in the Cruz camp were confident going into the weekend, saying their polling has held steady since Roll Call obtained a late June internal survey that showed Cruz in the lead.

Missouri: McCaskill Trails All Republicans in Latest Poll

Missouri: McCaskill Trails All Republicans in Latest Poll

(Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call)

Vulnerable Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) is just that, according to a new poll released this weekend by two Missouri media outlets.

In horserace matchups, McCaskill trailed all three of her serious Republican primary opponents.

Businessman John Brunner, who has put millions of his own money into the race, did the best against McCaskill, garnering 52 percent to the Senator’s 41 percent. Former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman pulled 49 percent to McCaskill’s 41 percent. And Rep. Todd Akin got 49 percent to McCaskill’s 44 percent. Full story
