A fierce tea-party-backed primary challenge in Idaho came up short Tuesday, as Republican Rep. Mike Simpson won his party’s nomination and is headed for a ninth term.

With a little help from his friends, Simpson, an appropriator and one of the most targeted GOP incumbents of the cycle, brushed back an effort to oust him by the Club for Growth, which supported attorney Bryan Smith.

Simpson led 63 percent to 37 percent when the Associated Press called the race with 36 percent of precincts reporting. Full story

Fight Night Preview: Primaries From Georgia to Idaho

It’s primary night in six states, with plenty of races to watch in Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

The only night with more states holding consequential primaries? In two weeks, on June 3.

(For a full list of the primary calendar, check out CQ Roll Call’s Primary Dates chart.)

There are no fewer than five competitive primary races in Georgia. Beyond that, three Republican incumbents steeped in the establishment will, by all appearances, swat back tea party rivals after the polls close. Unless there is a sleeper primary upset, the only incumbent who is in any sort of political trouble is a Democrat, Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., our Politics Team will have a live blog of the results below. After polls close, @Alexis_Levinson and @KyleTrygstad will track the Senate races, while @CahnEmily and @RollCallAbby will watch the House side of politics.

Here are the races to watch, accompanied by each race’s Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call race rating:

Idaho Republican Rep. Mike Simpson fired back this week at his primary rival, attorney Bryan Smith, escalating one of the most high-profile House primaries of the 2014 elections so far.

Last week, Smith went on the radio airwaves with an ad attacking Simpson — a close ally of Speaker John A. Boehner — for being “liberal,” a charge Simpson’s campaign denied. On Tuesday, Simpson sent out his own negative radio spot. The minute-long advertisement includes audio of a car crash and an ambulance, before the narrator accuses Smith of being a “personal injury lawyer.” Full story

Club for Growth Candidate Goes on the Air Against Boehner Ally | #ID02 (Updated)

Republican Bryan Smith is on the radio with a new ad smacking Republican Rep. Mike Simpson for not supporting a recent tea party effort to defund the 2010 health care overhaul.

A source in the campaign characterized the buy via email as a five-figure buy “on conservative talk radio across Idaho.” Idaho is a relatively inexpensive ad market.

Republican Readies Primary Challenge to Boehner Ally (Video)

The candidate:  Attorney Bryan Smith, a Republican
The member: Smith is challenging Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho.
The district: Idaho’s 2nd District is rated Safe Republican by the Rothenberg Political Report/CQ Roll Call. The district incorporates Boise but also includes much of the Gem State’s potato production.
The candidate’s team: Cold Spark Media’s Nachama Soloveichik and Mark Harris (general consultants) and Carrie Brown (campaign manager)

Attorney Bryan Smith earned the Club for Growth’s first major endorsement of the 2014 cycle, but he said he made the decision to challenge one of Speaker John A. Boehner’s top allies in Congress independently of the cash-flush, conservative group.

“People that I know apparently had submitted my name and then I did get a call from the Club for Growth,” Smith said in a Monday interview at the CQ Roll Call offices. “I did go back and interview with them. But I made the decision independent from the Club for Growth.” Full story

Club for Growth Backs Boehner Ally’s Primary Opponent

The Club for Growth backed a primary challenge to longtime Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, in its first major endorsement of the cycle.

On Wednesday, the influential conservative group announced its support for Bryan Smith, an attorney, to challenge Simpson, an eight-term member and close ally of Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio.

“We met with Bryan months ago after hearing about him through PrimaryMyCongressman.com, and we’re confident that he’ll be a strong conservative alternative to RINO incumbent Mike Simpson,” Club for Growth President Chris Chocola said in a press release.
