Clay Aiken Preparing Congressional Bid in North Carolina

“American Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken is preparing to run for Congress as a Democrat in North Carolina’s 2nd District, multiple Democratic sources confirmed to CQ Roll Call.

But his candidacy is being met with skepticism by some Tar Heel State Democrats, who are holding out hope of making it a race in this Republican-leaning district.

Aiken, a Raleigh native, is looking to take on second-term GOP Rep. Renee Ellmers in the central North Carolina district, which President Barack Obama lost by 15 points in 2012. Raleigh-based WRAL reported Thursday that Aiken is building a campaign team and is expected to formally announce next month.

Democratic operatives said Aiken has met with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee about the campaign. When asked, the DCCC declined to comment on whether any such meeting took place.

If Aiken gets into the race, some Democrats concede that his celebrity status would raise the profile of the race, which in turn could bring in resources. But will he be able to turn his name recognition into support?

“It’s a tough district; it’s a conservative-leaning district,” Democratic consultant Morgan Jackson said. “It’s a matter of can he tap into the base of folks who have been buying his albums for years?”

Former state Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco and attorney Houston Barnes, both Democrats, have already entered the race.

Democratic sources said Crisco, a 70-year-old businessman and former Asheboro city councilman who launched his campaign earlier this month, offers the kind of candidate profile that would give the party a shot there — and that an Aiken candidacy could hinder Crisco’s chances.

“It’s a tough seat to begin with, and [Aiken] would have problems getting someone to take him seriously,” one neutral North Carolina Democrat said of Aiken’s candidacy.

North Carolina’s 2nd District is rated a Safe Republican contest by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

Renee Ellmers is a disaster. Hope she gets primaried.

I think it should go to Pee Wee Herman…..

    • lapin.grove

So that is who he reminds of…little old PEE WEE… LOL

  • AdmiralAkbarf

Because our current elected officials aren’t disconnected enough from the lives of everyday people.

  • Vorant

Totally laughable, but at least he’s seen a modicum of success, unlike Obumbles who never held a “real job”, nor showed any talent beyond reading a teleprompter. Just keep Clay out of the Capital’s men’s room……

    • Tim

I’ll support him if Aiken comes out in favor of the American worker and OPPOSES amnesty and mass immigration at a time when 90 million Americans are unemployed.

      • MayaAyala

While that would be commendable, I still wouldn’t vote for him. The person he will run against ALREADY opposes amnesty, mass illegal immigration and Obamacare. Better yet: The person Aiken would face is opposed to most of the radical DNC party platform and its smugly audacious arrogance.

      • 1952rmdg

Unfortunately, that’s not likely the happen–the DEMS own the amnesty/open border’s agenda (aided and abetted by the corporatist plutocracy and their GOP flukies in Congress like Boehner et al.) The Dems want a 3rd world country where there’s one party, the Democrat Party. If you don’t think so, just look at how Cuomo is treating conservatives in NY State–the party of “tolerance” is showing that it is anything but tolerant to those who disagree with its political agenda.

      Electronic voting has consequences

Who made the electronic voting machine, who maintains the electronic voting machine, who programmed the electronic voting machine’s soft ware, and who counts the votes….

The holes in the links of the chain alone should warrant attention and yet here we have some advocating texting in votes and on line voting …

Remember when once upon a time We demanded those who vote to provide identification and we were even shown one poll worker voted six times and that is the one who bragged about it in Ohio, Recall folks?

      • xavier

they have gotten away with hacking the vote,
Dont expect it to work ever again, it dan only spread down to dogcatcher now.

When they lie to your face, that’s the last step before being buried in some cornfield wrapped in plastic and blankets.

      • DE OPPRESSO LIBER

Ohio just found out illegals voted as well. Let’s refresh…

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted announced Wednesday that his office found 17 non-citizens illegally cast ballots in the 2012 presidential election — and has referred the case for possible prosecution.

The alleged crime would be a notable case of voter fraud in a key swing state. By law, only American citizens are allowed the privilege of casting ballots for the nation’s leaders.

I have a responsibility to uphold election law, and under both federal and state law you must be a citizen to vote,” said Husted, a Republican who has aggressively tried to investigate voter fraud cases in his state.

Husted also found that 694 illegals remain on the voting rolls as of today. Originally it was thought only 274 illegals remain on the rolls. Now , it is up to 1500 plus and counting.

        • SWDC

And Boehner has done nothing about voter fraud in Ohio even. Interesting

Do recall Boehner hired McCain’s illegal immigrant advocate rather than hiring personal who want to help Americans and legal US immigrants get back to work and become gainfully employed …

Examples: ‘Ohio Syrians say they’re ‘doing what we can’ to help’ USA Today September 5, 2013

‘Girl wounded in Syria finds care, caring in Ohio’ June 10, 2013

          Better wake up USA

          • 1952rmdg

Anyone who cares about the future of the USA should realize that Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, Cole, etc., are just tools of the corporatist plutocracy that runs Wall Street, Silicon Valley, and the major corporations who are salivating at the thought of passing this “comprehensive immigration” bill with its provisions for amnesty, increased H-1B visas, and significantly higher legal immigration quotas. This is the “cheap labor” lobby that is paying these Republicans to do their bidding–pass this law in one form or another, and straddle the American people with millions more legal immigrants who will drive down wages and raise unemployment levels for decades while the corporations get all the cheap labor they want, and the US taxpayer will foot the bill for the social services, including health care, that these mostly poor and/or mostly poorly educated immigrants will receive while American workers face chronic unemployment and wage stagnation–yet are subjected to higher taxes to pay for these services. Corporations and the wealthy, including Congresspeople, benefit while the rest of us suffer.

1% of the country has a net worth of 1 million dollars or more.
62% of the members of Congress have a net worth of 1 million dollars or more.
Something stinks here….it is very obvious when guys like Rahm Emmanuel walk in to congress with a net worth of 200,000 and leaves 20 years later with a net worth of 26 million dollars.
Insider trading ,corp cronyism, waste , fraud and corruption fatten the wallets of these members of congress , while draining our wallets , all at the same time.

          • DE OPPRESSO LIBER

            well stated

          • Dano481971

You do realize, state officials run elections, not federal officials. John Boehner is the Speaker of the House, he has nothing to do with enforcing voter laws in elections. That falls on the state officials. Even if a federal election law is broken, it is handled by the Justice Department, of which John Boehner has no control.

Clay is only famous for coming in second place on American Idol, announcing that he was gay, placing second on Celebrity Apprentice and also spending a fortune on plastic surgery.

I just don’t understand why anyone in that district would want him as their representative. Yes, he earned a degree in Special Education. However, he never actually USED the degree after he earned it.

I can’t imagine why he thinks that he is qualified to represent a district that just doesn’t seem to reflect his views. How would he even represent the regular people in that district?

      • xavier

What business of yours is the sexual orientation of Sen Graham (of South Carolina, not North Carolina, by the way)? Why do you feel the need to address Sen Graham with the feminine honorific? Does it make you feel more manly and tough? What kind of stereotyping are you doing? I wonder what you would say if a tea partier made a comment like yours about public figure whose sexual orientation is questionable?

I’m betting that North Carolina isn’t as stupid as California, New York and Minnesota which elect celebrities to public office just because they’re celebrities.

    • Rowwdy Colt

You would probably win that bet. However, the illegals that have been flooding in will cause a problem. Many have been caught trying to vote. All of whom were registered democrats.

One of the reasons so many are getting registered is; they sign up for ANY social services and do it through mail, they are sent voter registration applications. No ID or birth certificate required, no checking. Mail the application back and bingo….you get a registered voter card. The socialists at work.

    • Pork eatin’ infidel

Agreed. But it’s the folks moving into here from their previously screwed up states, that are bringing their voting habits with them….

I cant wait to see him defend Democare, to a group of people who just had their plans cancelled , thanks to the same policy he is defending.
In fact , I can’t wait to see all Democare members defend the fact you cant keep your plan or your doc

this is the typical political scam. hope you have name recognition, good or bad policies / ideas , don’t seem to matter…

May I be so bold to ask what ideas/policy suggestions, he shares with voters from this district ? Not too many , to say the least. he is nothing but another useful idiot.

  • NCGirl29

I live here and I won’t be voting for him. I like him and all but he should be a small town mayor or something first.

  • Charles H Jolly

Clay has been convinced by other stupid Demroids that he should run for congress in the 2nd district of NC. People of the 2nd district, Are you not embarrassed?

  • EEDDGGY1776

How low can the Democrat/Socialist Party set the bar? Gee, I wonder what his singular platform might be?

  • frigu

If the Republican in this race goes on the attack against Aiken, will the liberals on MSNBC start complaining about a war on women.

  • TimeBomb

He and Barney’s Fwank to share notes and swap tips.

  • JWales

he’d be as good a Dem as any of the other rubber stampers for the Dictator

  • Jorja1234

    Aunt Bee for congress!

  • Prelusive007

NC has its share of dumb azzes like every other state but I seriously don’t believe there are enough of them to vote that guy in.

  • Kenner

‘Aiken candidacy could hinder Crisco’s chances’. —the political headline of the year!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/RobertCullari Bobby Cullari

    Never in N Carolina…
Move to California for a sure win.

  • Smith Greg

They will not elect a gay, Black voters are not what you would call gay supporters and the hillbillies are also anti-SIN.

  • VoodooChile2

Just what we need another liberal idiot, gay activist in congress. N.C. I hope you are smarter than that.

  • ojfl

In a district that the president lost by 15 points maybe it is better for Democrats to go for the star power rather than the ideas…

  • UteDB

His campaign promise will be free KY to all North Carolinians.

  • labash

Has a better chance winning the Ms. Norf Cackalacky Beauty Pageant.

    • Equality7-2521

That sure is one homely woman…

  • Sagramore

Isn’t this the boy who was forced to drink a bucket of urine in a public restaurant a couple of years ago? I must assume that he held a number of local offices after that tragic event. He probably served in the military after that. I suspect he obtained a degree in political science along the way. Maybe he interned in the State Department at some point and now he is ready to represent the people of his district. I’m sure he has a strong grasp of agricultural issues as well as banking and budget problems. He probably has detailed knowledge terrorism and how that relates to high risk sites in NC. I’m certain he is familiar with commerce and international laws that concern large scale businesses in the state. Of course his grasp of criminal law and the courts is beyond reproach. I have no doubt that in these times of out of control spending, new health care issues, foreign wars and constricting work force issues that there is no one more qualified to represent the people of North Carolina than a young pop singer. I wonder if he has an ideological reason for wanting the reigns of power?

    • Zornorph

Clay Aikin’s primary area of interest is special needs children and he has a degree in Education. If he were somehow elected, I expect you’d see him have a big focus in that area, but he’s far from dumb. I’m GOP, but he’s probably smarter than Elmers if you want to know the truth.

  • OldSalt48

    Another “GAY BLADE”…Democrat !

  • Hawk483

Really going to vote for him?

  • Thor Williams

So other than singing and loving men, he is qualified to serve how?

    • Gary Johns

Ask Barney Frank. And he only had one of those qualifications…

  • BarackForceTrauma

Is the south really ready for Senator Gay Aiken?

  • tcp53

Well, America can rest assured that Barry Obama will be “behind” Mr. Aiken……

  • rick charles

Shouldn’t it have to run in San Francisco?

  • Gary Johns

    Free fruitcake for all voters…

  • Guest

    Run, I dare you.

  • onetrickpony

What’s his platform? Probably gay driven.

  • Guest

The GLAAD Party candidate may lose but there could be a gay federal judge ready overturn the election so the people of NC will on the right side of history..blah, blah, blah.

  • DriveMonkeyDrive

Instead of handing out bumper stickers is he going to hand out condoms instead?

  • Rowwdy Colt

This little !!! doesn’t stand a chance. He will ‘try’ to use his gay status to get elected. Actually, he is already a dimwit joke here.

  • Elaine Farrell

It’s a matter of whether they think they have enough phony or dead voters registered to win…

  • nightsong

Why would a young, smart, and successful singer suddenly want to go into politics, and especially at that level?

  • ThisIs84

    Oh, great.

  • Ward Howard

I just threw-up in my mouth a little.

  • Salvador_Chromo

Seriously a conservative leaning district in North Carolina. Atkins has a better shoot of reuniting the group Menudo for a comeback tour.

  • ralphie44

SC has the gay republicrat, and NC can have the gay Demublican.
Both can run on family values.

  • The Vegan

Just what we need in congress, another gay blade.

  • Craggy old conservative

This young gay caballero would stand a better chance to win in San Fran or NY city. There are swarms of queers and drag queens in those locations that would vote for him.

  • bill1942

Just what we need – another fairey in Washington

  • Michael Muetzel

Good for him! This will create a huge voluntary cash stream into the district for printing jobs, t-shirts, buttons, hotels/motels, it’s wonderful! Translation – waste of time and $.

  • somehistorian

He would make a great Dembagger or Demgagger…..take your pick.

  • Jerry Cummings

Raised in a conservative-leaning district and he still turns out a Dem. Maybe he will be a blue dog Dem.

  • truthtelleruno

clay is gonna RUN? BULLSPIT, he will be prancing! Wonder if he’ll wear his azzless chaps?

  • The Man from Scene 24

His qualification? He’s gay, and that will be enough for the lemmings.

  • Mya View

Aiken doesn’t have a chance in h e l l. This must be his new way of drawing attention to himself before releasing a new album. Just a new marketing slant by using other people’s money to get him there.

  • potusWORTHLESS

That is all AMERICA needs! Another fubbed duck homosexual democrat!

  • Condensate

Clay Aiken? Don’t we already have our quota of vacuous imbeciles in government??

  • Lobster01

HaHa that is some funny stuff, the dems are down to the Clay Aikens types.

  • zagnut64

Amazing what passes for celebrity status. Proof that even turds float to the top.

  • Elaphas Maximus

So the democrat pigs are hoping that Aiken will lean on his album sales to get the seat? Okay, North Carolina – surely you aren’t that far gone yet.

  • Katherine McChesney

    What a joke.

  • WillinSC

I will forever lose respect for NC and the raleigh area if he wins

  • drobinson117

He’s not smart enough to represent North Carolina as either a Democrat or Republican. Don’t be fooled by WRAL’s foaming at the mouth and fawning over a celebrity Democrat. He’s just doing it for the financial security of a House position.

  • BenTravis

What in the world could this guy add to the betterment of North Carolina ?

  • Bipper

Clay, Monica Lewinski just called and left a message…”Make sure you Scotchgard all your dresses.”

  • http://www.foxnews.com/ Game On

He is gay. That is the only qualification the liberals require these days.

  • zl28

    The typical disgusting democrat.

  • a_hick_in_hixville

He will most certainly lose running in NC. I doubt he could win even in Asheville.

    • jasonm1980

I don’t know about that. There are a lot of fringe left wing lunatics in Asheville who migated from blue state cesspools. Probaly enough to vote him in as mayor of Asheville but he wouldn’t win Mark Meadows’ congressional seat.

  • Guest

Please run, it will be a great opportunity to describe the homosexual lifestyle when it may really apply.

  • Guest

The only way she can win is if ds hijack her friendly manilow presentation, while they go on rino safari. That is how they have always succeeded.

  • Steve D’Agostino

Run, Clay, run! Ellmers will mop the floor with you! That part of our fair city is solidly red, anyway…

  • Norman Bates

Clay’s #1 focus has always been on education and inclusion. He has been the Unicef Ambassador of Education World Wide since 2004. He was a Special Ed teacher before fame. He founded The National Inclusion Project in 2003 to provide funds and training to promote Inclusion for all children in classrooms and recreation. He has a school aged son and is very concerned about the dismantling of decades of progress in the School system particularly in North Carolina. He was on President Bush’s Committee to Help Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. Oh yeah, he’s also gay.

  • AnthonyLook

Every citizen has a right to run or any public office. He may be the bridge of civility and common ground needed in NC. Let’s hear him out.

  • Lilly Peace

He has to ‘tap into the people who buy his music’? This is now a qualification for a political person? This world is so sick. I am sure he will make a great Communist for the Oblunda Administration. Soon he will be quoting from the quran too along with Hitlary!

  • http://www.quidblog.com/ PeterP

Aiken couldn’t beat Ruben Stoddard. He’s no threat.

  • Willys

Banking on his runner-up in American Idol tells us everything we need to know about Clay Aiken.

    • View From The Left

Creating a straw-man argument about what Clay Aiken is “banking” on if he runs for Congress tells us everything we need to know about you.

  • Dusty Thompson

Being a “Democrat” removes ANY possibility of him being “intelligent”…

  • FrancisChalk

I don’t have a clue who Clay Aiken is, and as per a Monty Python skit, “The only thing worse than NOT knowing who Clay Aiken is . . . . . . is KNOWING who Clay Aiken is.”

  • Wally Wingert

I predict he won’t win the race for Congress, but will be a runner-up.
