The Club for Growth’s independent expenditure arm has started airing television spots again on behalf of Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., according to Federal Election Commission records.
The move could be indicative that Amash is in some political jeopardy just days ahead of the August 5 primary.
Amash is fending off a primary challenge from former East Grand Rapids School Trustee Brian Ellis, a self-funding candidate with endorsements from a slew of business-friendly groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The club is one of several tea party groups and members of Congress who are circling their wagons around the libertarian-minded Amash.
The club made two major expenditures involving television ad production and airtime purchases, each worth about $70,000, according to online records. One expenditure is in favor of Amash and the other is in opposition to Ellis.
The move comes about a week after it was reported the Michigan Chamber of Commerce started making six-figure television buys on behalf of Ellis.
These are major buys in the Grand Rapids market, where it is relatively inexpensive to purchase media.
The club previously went off the air on July 21, according to a statement from the group’s spokesman last week.
“Club for Growth Action’s most recent TV ad buy ended on Monday [July 21],” Club spokesman Barney Keller said via email last Friday. “We are confident that Congressman Amash is in a very strong position for reelection, but we continue to closely monitor the race, and we might or might not return to the TV airwaves prior to Election Day.”
In full, the club has spent over $500,000 protecting Amash.
The winner of this race is all but certain to win in the fall. The race is rated Safe Republican by Rothenberg Political Report.
