Former State Department senior adviser Bobby McKenzie, a Democrat, announced Thursday he will challenge to Rep. Kerry Bentivolio in Michigan’s 11th District.

Bentivolio, a Republican, now officially faces challenges in the primary and general election. Attorney David Trott declared his primary challenge against freshman Republican in September.

McKenzie’s announcement means Democrats could also have a primary in this district northwest of Detroit. CQ Roll Call recently reported that House Democrats are recruiting interim Wayne State University Law School Dean Jocelyn Benson. Last week, she attended a House Democratic Caucus meeting and expressed interest in running for the seat.

“The men and women of this district deserve better than a divisive Tea Party extremist like Kerry Bentivolio, and we deserve better than the prospect of David Trott, a man who made a fortune off the bankruptcies and foreclosures that have devastated our region,” McKenzie said in a statement.

The race is rated Favored Republican Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.
