Willie Robertson, a reality television show celebrity on the popular “Duck Dynasty” series, will star in a new kind of program starting Thursday: a campaign television spot for Louisiana’s 5th District special election.
In the advertisement, Robertson proclaims his support for GOP businessman Vance McAllister, the underdog in Saturday’s contest.
“Hey this is Willie Robertson, reminding you to get out Saturday, Nov. 16 and vote for my good buddy Vance McAllister. Let’s send somebody from the 5th District who speaks for us to help turn Washington around,” Robertson says in the ad, produced by RedPrint Strategy.
The ad will run on broadcast, cable and the Internet in the final three days of the contest.
The Robertson family, whose self-described “redneck” antics have made “Duck Dynasty” the most-watched cable reality television show in history, are residents of the 5th District. They are also friends of McAllister’s and have appeared at multiple events for him throughout the race.
“It plays into our narrative very well,” said Josh Robinson, a top adviser to McAllister’s campaign. “Vance is a different kind of candidate. And he’s getting support from elected officials, but also from people that don’t get involved in politics. The Robertsons, this is their home district, but they don’t take a stand politically very much.”
McAllister garnered 18 percent of the vote in the Oct. 16 open primary, vaulting him to the second-place spot over 12 other candidates, including state lawmakers, popular mayors and a former member of Congress.
