Updated 2:38 p.m. | Rep. Ed Pastor, D-Ariz., announced Thursday he will not seek a 12th term in the 7th District.

“I’ve been in public office for 39 years and it’s been a pleasure to serve the people of Arizona,” Pastor, 70, said in a statement. “After 23 in Congress, I feel it’s time for me to seek out a new endeavor. It’s been a great honor, a great experience and a great joy for me to serve in Congress. I think it’s time for me to do something else.”

Pastor’s district, located in the heart of downtown Phoenix, is not likely to switch party control. President Barack Obama carried the district by a 45-point margin in 2012, making it one of the most heavily Democratic districts in the country.

Arizona Democrats previously said they viewed assistant state House Minority Leader Ruben Gallego as Pastor’s heir apparent. Gallego tweeted shortly after Pastor’s announcement that he is “in for Congress.”

In the immediate aftermath of Pastor’s announcement, party sources in the state suggested a handful of other possible contenders, mostly from the Phoenix City Council and the state Legislature.

They included city council members Laura Pastor (the retiring congressman’s daughter), Michael Nowakowski and Daniel Valenzuela; state House Minority Leader Chad Campbell; state Sen. Anna Tovar; Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox; and Avondale Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers.

Pastor is the 21st House member set to retire at the end of 2014. For the full retirement list, plus those running for other offices, see Roll Call’s Casualty List.

Wow they are dropping like flies

    • Redleg7

…. but still not at a fast enough rate.

  • Ladarius Wooten

Being a (D), with Obamacare on the ballot is considered a pre-existing condition. I am glad Pelosi’s henchmen and women are retiring left and right.

    • David T

Yes, I’m sure that a district that went 72-27 for Obama in 2012 (up from 65-34 in 2008) is going to elect the right-wing Republican of your dreams. No doubt some congressmen and women retire because they fear defeat in the next election, but Pastor was not one.

      • Paul Pablo

But that district, where I live, is packed with poor Latinos who have lost their houses and income thanks to Democrat policies.

  • Paul Pablo

I can run for his seat! I live in his district. I am latino and Republican

  • Paul Pablo

well I can run for his seat now! I am latino and republican

    • bobw-66554432

You’ve got my vote! Well, if you were a Democrat you might have ended up with it even though I live in a completely different state. I drove through Phoenix to get to Scottsdale once, does that count?

      • Paul Pablo

        that is good enough! Thanks

    • Granny Tenderstone

you will never be elected in that district. To say your are Latino and Republican is like saying “I love the party that craps all over Latinos”. You can’t serve two masters or burn the candle at both ends, and the R party is a FASCIST party, and fascists hate. They especially hate Latinos, but will play you as a sucker. You need to wake up.

      • Paul Pablo

Wait a minute! Are you saying that I am racist? That I hate Latinos? How can that be if I am Latino myself? You don’t have an argument. All you have is talking points from the Democrats who are really racists. After 40 + years of their war on poverty, Latinos are worst than ever! Look at who is a drop out, families without both parents, poor on welfare: Yes Latinos. Our nation needs opportunities not gov hand outs!

  • fbowman

Another one bites the dust. adios!

  • Glenn Koons

A Dem will win but supposed a Pub Hispanic well known in the community ran? Perhaps at least there would be some money spent by the DNC to hold the seat.

  • RetiredBob

He’s been my congressman since I moved to PHX in 2007…talk about a do nothing…good riddance.

  • jmatt55

Oh, the tiiiimes, they are a’chaaaanging….

    • Redleg7

…. all in defense of the people’s liberty, Mr. Locke.

      • jmatt55

        Good eye.

  • Fred Miller

Wonder what percentage of his district is dependent on Uncle Sugar?

    • Redleg7

…. I suspect the easier answer would be “what percentage is not” in a state of dependency (much smaller number).

  • DisgustedwithElitism

It simply does not appear advisable to stand between a Democrat incumbent and the exit this election cycle. Could it be more than just the ACA? Could it be the unmitigated failure that is the BHO presidency?

    • terjeanderson

Are you unaware that more Republican incumbents than Democratic incumbents are leaving the House this election cycle?

Could it be more than just shutting down the government? Could it be the unmitigated failure that is the Boehner Speakership and the tea party dominance of the party?

      • DisgustedwithElitism

BHO shut down that part of the government that was shut down (87% of it remained open).

BHO showed his true colors when he tried to lock up monuments on the National Mall that do not have fences and gates with locks. Denying access to the national parks was petty and mean.

There is nothing that will bring out the worst in a Leftist than a dose of reality. The reality is that BHO and his team are failures at governing; all they know is politics, politics, politics, and they do not care who or what is harmed so long as they retain power.

nice dodge of the debunking of your original comment, covered over by a flurry of foxnews talling points

          • DisgustedwithElitism

Facts, only facts,… I get my information from many sources, consider it carefully, and draw my own conclusions.

  • Granny Tenderstone

    well done Ed!!

    • barracuda43

Destroying the country? Great job Ed

    • Paul Pablo

There is really nothing to thank Ed for. He is just collecting his salary and now a pension for doing nothing in our community.

  • Beachguy53

Pastor being put out to pasture.

  • Buro Cratz

As part of its war against Western civilization, Hussein Obama’s criminal marxist regime has obstructed pro-life groups health care summits.
