Former White House aide Elise Stefanik is in a strong position to win Tuesday’s GOP primary in an upstate New York district, according to a new poll.

Stefanik led 45 percent to 37 percent for businessman Matt Doheny in the automated poll conducted by Republican firm Harper Polling. The poll follows more than $1 million in outside spending in the 21st District on Stefanik’s behalf.

Doheny is slightly better known in the district, but 41 percent of respondents had a negative view him while 39 percent viewed him favorably. Nearly half of all those surveyed, 49 percent, said they had a positive image of Stefanik while 29 percent had a negative opinion of her.

Thirty-five percent of respondents identified themselves as “very conservative.” An additional 37 percent said they were “somewhat conservative,” 23 percent said they were moderate and 4 percent liberal.

The poll surveyed 498 voters June 17-18 and had a 4.4-point margin of error. It did not test hypothetical matchups with the presumptive Democratic nominee, documentary filmmaker Aaron Woolf.

This is a race to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Bill Owens. The race is rated Tossup by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated Doheny’s support in the survey.

What does he plan to do about the three million unemployed Americans who are STILL WITHOUT an unemployment extension since late last December? The Republicans have FAILED these people and have destined them to financial ruin and poverty. They intentionally used their senate vote to kill the extension bill to make it impossible to pass. They showed a total lack of human decency and compassion towards these struggling families. Three Million Hurting Struggling Voters will be sure to vote this coming election. We need to vote these politicians out from office. They have proven themselves unworthy of the job

The government asks for our sons and daughters to send to war, but fails to provide for them when the war is over. They freely will spend billions of dollars for foreign aid, but not pass an unemployment bill, for the three million unemployed families, who have been without benefits, since late last December. For the past six months, the republican senate has held the extension bill “hostage” in the senate, for political leverage, and party politics. While millions of unemployed families continue falling into financial ruin, losing all that they had worked for, over many years. These republicans have shown a total lack of human compassion, and common decency, towards these unfortunate families. Instead of trying to help them, they chose to arrogantly label them as “lazy”, and decided to ignore their pleas for help. Both political parties have utterly failed these people.

    1. Since we do not have a draft, no serviceman is compelled to serve — they do so out of a commitment and loyalty to country. And they do so with full knowledge of the terms and conditions under which they serve. The government is not obligated to provide for them, except for injuries sustained as a result — as is provided in the laws of this country.

    2. Last I checked, the Senate was controlled by the DEMOCRATS, not the GOP. And I agree, the Senate is held hostage by a leadership devoid of compassion who have held any agreement on this issue hostage by failing to compromise sufficiently to get even 5 Republicans to support it (which is all they need). And they certainly could have passed it last year, but they preferred to have an issue with which to bludgeon Republicans with. Frankly, I have rarely seen such callous behavior by the Democrats.

    3. The only people I have heard use the term “lazy” is Democrats. Your argument is a complete strawman.
