EMILY’s List announced on Tuesday its support for Hawaii Rep. Colleen Hanabusa in next year’s Democratic Senate primary in the Aloha State.
Hanabusa, who officially entered the race last week, will face appointed Sen. Brian Schatz in the special election to fill the remaining two years of the late Sen. Daniel K. Inouye’s term.
The endorsement is not a surprise. The group, which backs female Democratic candidates who support abortion rights, has supported Hanabusa for years. It also comes on the heels of an endorsement from Inouye’s widow, Irene Hirano Inouye.
“Now the EMILY’s List community is ready to fight for her every step of the way so that she can take her place as a senator from Hawai’i,” EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock said in a statement. “Colleen is the right choice for women and families in Hawai’i, and EMILY’s List won’t stop until she shatters yet another glass ceiling by making Hawai’i the fourth state to send two women to the United States Senate.”

Schatz, who has the support of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, has rolled out endorsements in recent days as well. The Schatz campaign announced the backing of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers, the Hawaii Fire Fighters Association, and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund endorsed Schatz in March.
