Florida Republican Party Chairman Lenny Curry on Monday called for Rep. Trey Radel to resign, marking the highest-ranking local GOP official yet to push for the embattled Republican congressman to step down.
“The people of Florida’s 19th Congressional District need a Congressman who is 100 percent focused on the needs of Southwest Florida,” Curry said in a statement. “Therefore, Congressman Radel should step down and focus his attention on rehabilitation and his family.”
Radel did not resign at a news conference last week. While Florida state party leadership has lost confidence in Radel, House Republican leadership has given him breathing room to handle his personal issues.
Radel’s 19th District is solid Republican territory. A handful of Republicans are in a position to run for his seat, either in a special election or possibly challenge him in a primary next year.
