A little more than a month out from New York’s primaries, three female House Democrats are hosting a New York City fundraiser on behalf of Rep. Charles B. Rangel, who is again facing a stiff intraparty challenge.

New York Democratic Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney emailed Rangel’s supporter list Thursday with the subject line, “Women Can Count on Charlie Rangel.” The postscript read: “On May 22, I’m hosting a fundraiser at my house for Charlie with Congress Members Nita Lowey and Terri Sewell. Will I see you there?”

Rangel, running for a 23rd term, was named Tuesday as one of Roll Call’s 10 most vulnerable House members of 2014. He faces state Sen. Adriano Espaillat and Pastor Michael Walrond in the June 24 Democratic primary, which will decide the next member of Congress from this heavily Democratic district.

The fundraising email from Maloney links to an invitation on Rangel’s campaign website announcing a May 22 “Spring Garden Party.” Suggested donations range from $250 to $2,600.

Maloney represents the wealthiest district in the United States, New York’s 11th, which covers Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Earlier this spring, she hosted a fundraiser at her home on behalf of former New York City Councilman Domenic M. Recchia Jr., who is challenging GOP Rep. Michael G. Grimm, who represents Staten Island and Brooklyn.

Lowey is a fellow member of the New York delegation, and Sewell, of Alabama, is a roommate of Maloney’s in Washington, D.C. Sewell is also a former associate at the prestigious New York City-based Davis Polk & Wardwell law firm.

Both Lowey and Sewell serve on powerful committees that translate to high capacities to fundraise. Lowey is the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, while Sewell serves on the House Financial Services Committee.

Who is insane enough to support that old corrupt alligator?

    • David Lloyd-Jones

      Dee,

Lotta people who like a few teeth and claws out there in the arena for them, maybe?

Charlie Rangel is one of the most interesting members of Congress. Not nice. Not particularly honest. He has a lot of guts, a commodity in short supply in Congress, particularly among long time pols of either party. He’s one of the few Democrats who is a genuine war hero, having led a group of fellow soldiers out from behind enemy lines during the Korean War. He’s also a survivor, being one of the few pols to be re-elected after receiving a censure for ethics violation by the full House. He’s tough and smart and often tells the truth when his leadership would have preferred he remain silent. I wouldn’t bet against him being back in 2015.

      Snidely,
      Well said.

Me? In somewhat the same vein, I’m just pissed off at Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. for dying before I could shake his hand.

I have a weakness for varmints, people who give it to the PC media in the eye. Sarah Palin, Governors Edwin W. Edwards, Earl K. Long

        • David Lloyd-Jones

Ageed on all, although I’m not quite sure that varmint is the right word for dear Sarah. I like her, and a good deal of her style, and I even agree with her from time to time.

On the other hand I have two kinds of disagreements with her. Type A, maybe, are right-wing nutso positions that she has adopted since she hit the national scene, i.e. things I think she used to oppose when she was — in a small few ways — a good governor. Type B are different, the things she says out of mock stupidity and utterly genuine ignorance. I don’t for a moment think she’s stupid, and she’s certainly both witty and cunning; but ignorant? She has a thorough-going Rumsfeldian ignorance: ignorance about ignorance to at least three ply.

But she’s fun, as are your others.

          Cheers,

          -dlj.
