Internal Poll: GOP Challenger Up In Targeted Illinois Race

GOP state Rep. Mike Bost had a 6-point lead on freshman Democratic Rep. Bill Enyart in a targeted Illinois House race, according to an internal poll conducted for Bost’s campaign and provided first to CQ Roll Call.

Bost garnered 43 percent to Enyart’s 37 percent, according to the poll, conducted by GOP polling firm The Tarrance Group.

The poll also found Enyart was not well established in his Illinois’ 12th District one year and five months into his term. Only 27 percent of voters approved of the job Enyart is doing, with half telling pollsters they were ready for new leadership in Congress.

The poll, seen above, surveyed 400 likely registered voters via telephone interviews from April 21-23. It had a margin of error of 4.9 points.

According to the poll, 60 percent of voters were familiar with Bost, who is known in Illinois for his passionate floor speeches in the state legislature.

Illinois is a key component to the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “Drive to 245” campaign, which seeks to pick up 12 seats across the House map in November. Bost and former Rep. Robert Dold — who is running a comeback bid in Illinois’ 10th District — were recently named “Young Guns” in the NRCC’s program to aid promising candidates.

As of March 31, Bost reported $201,000 in cash on hand while Enyart reported $555,000 in the bank.

Voters in this southwestern Illinois district, which shares a border with St. Louis, voted for President Barack Obama by a 2-point margin in 2012, making this a competitive seat in November. It is rated a Leans Democratic district by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

small sample size, and it’s still too early to be using likely voter models.

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS DECLARED WAR ON THE POOR AND UNEMPLOYED IN OUR COUNTRY. THEY HAVE BECOME SO DISCONECTED FROM THE PEOPLE THAT THEY HAVE NO CLUES AS TO WHAT IS HAPPENING OUT IN THE “REAL WORLD”. MILLIONS OF UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES HAVE SUFFERED BECAUSE OF THEIR LACK OF COMPASSION AND HUMAN DECENCY. SINCE LATE LAST DECEMBER, MORE THAN 2.6 MILLION AMERICANS HAVE BEEN WITHOUT UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS, BECAUSE OF THE REPUBLICANS “PARTY POLITICS”, AND POLITICAL AGENDA, THE REPUBLICANS HAVE HELD THE MUCH NEEDED EXTENSION BILL “HOSTAGE” FOR POLITICAL LEVERAGE, AND PARTY AGENDAS. THEY HAVE LACKED COMAPSSION AND COMMON DECENCY, BY USING THESE UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES AS BARGAINING CHIPS, TO GET THEIR BILLS PASSED IN RETURN IN THE SENATE. THEY HAVE DRAGGED THEIR FEET FOR THE PAST FIVE MONTHS, CAUSING DELAY AFTER DELAY, IN THE HOPES OF MAKING IT IMPOSSIBE TO EVER HAVE THE EXTENSION BILL PASSED. NOW, IT’S THE END OF MAY, AND THEY ARE NOW SAYING THAT IT’S NOW TOO LATE TO PASS THE BILL. THEY KNEW THIS FROM THE START, AND THEY DELIBERATELY MADE SURE IT WOULD BE TOO LATE. MILLIONS OF THESE FAMILIES HAVE FACED EVICTIONS, HOME FORECLOSURES, BANKRUPTCY, AND HOMELESSNESS, AND THEY COULDN’T HAVE CARED LESS. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE BEEN A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT TO THEIR “FORMER” REPUBLICAN CONSTITUENTS. THEY HAVE SHOWN THE WORLD FOR WHOM THEY REPRESENT AND WORK FOR, AND IT’S NOT YOU OR ME. THEY REPRESENT PEOPLE LIKE THE KOCH BROTHERS, AND BIG CORPORATIONS. YOU KNOW, THE ONE PERCENT AT THE TOP. I HOPE THAT ALL THESE MILLIONS OF HURTING PEOPLE WILL MAKE SURE NOT TO VOTE REPUBLICAN IN THE COMING ELECTION. THEY’RE NOT WORTHY OF OUR VOTE

You are mistaken, sir. The Republican Party did no such thing. It was President Lyndon Johnson who “declared war on the poor and the unemployed in our country.” The Republicans aim only to finish the job that he started. As for those same Republicans “hav(-ing) become so disconnected from the people that they have no clues as to what is happening out in the ‘real world’,” in what (meaningful) way does that differentiate them from the Democrats?

I HOPE THESE PUBLIC OFFICIALS ENJOY THEIR TIME LEFT IN OFFICE, BECAUSE THERE ARE NOW MORE THAN 2.6 MILLION ANGRY VOTERS, WHO WILL SOON VOTE THEM OUT OF THEIR CUSHY JOBS. THESE MEN ARE A POOR EXCUSE FOR A PUBLIC SERVANT, AND A HUMAN BEING, THEY ARE WITHOUT A SOUL AND HEART. THEY’RE VOID OF COMPASSION AND COMMON DECENCY. THEY WORK ONLY FOR THEMSELVES AND THE LOBBYISTS WHO BOUGHT THEM. THEY ARE USELESS, AND SHOULD BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE IN THE COMING ELECTIONS. THERE IS NO EXCUSE WHATSOEVER, TO HAVE NOT PASSED THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION BILL FOR THESE MILLIONS OF STRUGGLING FAMILIES WITH NO INCOME. IT’S TIME THAT AMERICANS FINALLY CLEAN HOUSE, AND TAKE THE TRASH TO THE CURB.

Polls conducted by candidates usually show sunny skies for that candidate. Independently conducted polls are more reliable. No question that Enyart is vulnerable. But he beat a well financed candidate last time by a margin that surprised most– 11 points, running 9 points ahead of Obama’s margin. Turnout will be key, and Springfield Dems are trying to load the ballot with puffery ‘advisory’ referendums they think will attract more Dem voters to the polls.

I’m not surprised that Paula Bradshaw’s (the Green Party candidate, could they have mentioned her by name for crying out loud?) polling at nine percent. Given how Bill Enyart’s been attacking both civil liberties and the environment during his time in office so far, combined with the fracking issue in some parts of IL-12, that 9% is probably accurate and might even go up further in later polls if Enyart does anything else to alienate the pro-environmental and pro-civil liberty sections of his base (or what’s left of it probably). I was in Belleville, which is supposed to be Enyart’s stronghold, marching with the Illinois Green Party in the Shiner’s parade. The amount of cheers we got might cause one to think Belleville was a Green Party town instead.

correction, the parade is called the Shriner’s parade
