Illinois: Timothy Johnson Noncommittal on Nominee for His Seat

House Republicans have rallied behind their new 13th district nominee, Rodney Davis, except for the Member vacating the seat.

Rep. Timothy Johnson (R) declined to say whether he’s backing Davis when Roll Call questioned him between floor votes on Wednesday.

“I’m not doing interviews right now,” Johnson said before walking away. He did not return a follow-up interview request placed with his staff.

Davis faces emergency room doctor David Gill (D) in the Southern Illinois district. The race is competitive.

Johnson abruptly announced his retirement after the primary. His preferred candidate to succeed him, a former top aide, applied to run in his stead. But last month, local county party leaders instead selected Davis as their new nominee.

Davis has raised $90,00 from Capitol Hill Republicans since he was chosen as the nominee almost two months ago. Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.) have donated to Davis, as have most Republican House Members from Illinois.
