Israel: Elements of Republican Base ‘Animated By Racism’

Rep. Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said Sunday “not all” of his Republican colleagues are racist.

In a joint appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union“ with National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Greg Walden of Oregon, the New York Democrat was asked by host Candy Crowley whether he agreed with recent comments by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., that race played a factor in an immigration overhaul not being brought up for a vote in the House and whether he thought his GOP colleagues are racist.

“Not all of them, no, of course not,” Israel said. “But to a significant extent, the Republican base does have elements that are animated by racism. And that’s unfortunate.”

Asked if comments about race by Pelosi and Attorney General Eric Holder, as well as the “war on women” rhetoric from Democrats last week, were about getting the base out to vote in November, Israel said, “We don’t need to get our base out, because frankly, we’re ready to pass an immigration bill. We’d rather pass an immigration bill than worry about the election.”

The joint interview also touched on the midterm elections, what else Congress will get done this year, the Republican brand and a recent congressional scandal.

Crowley asked Walden whether Rep. Vance McAllister, R-La., should resign following leaked video footage that showed McAllister kissing a member of his staff who is not his wife. Walden said McAllister’s behavior was inappropriate for a member of Congress, but stopped short of calling for his resignation.

“He needs to answer to his people and his family and needs to be held to a very high standard in Congress. And I don’t think he’s been to that standard,” Walden said.

Walden’s comments add to growing pressure for McAllister to step aside following the scandal, which broke one weeks ago. McAllister has said he has no plans to step down.

What is the standard for Congress? Certainly lying is “OK” based on the untrue statements of Pelosi and Reid. Of course, they are democrats and they are held to lower standards like lying about “Fast and Furious”, Benghazi, the IRS, the NSA, etc. Don’t forget that Obama is half White when you all pull out the “Race Card”!

    • KarenJ

Your dear leaders and their media flacks have finally agreed that it’s time to get off the hobby horse and stop pretending there’s S*C*A*N*D*A*L despite Rs spending hundreds of millions of the Taxpayers’ dollars looking under every Administration desk for evidence, and not finding a durn thing.

BTW, YOU are the one who interjected “race” into this discussion, not me or any other lib.

      • CE

I wouldn’t exactly phrase it like that. There are plenty of scandals, reported and unreported. Scandals stem from power, not party.
The fact is, Obama has done terrible things, as have his predecessors.
To live in another world is to engage in the very partisanship you oppose…

        • Jack Everett

Both parties are guilty of injustice. Party supporters need to hold their politicians to stricter standards and stop trying to make excuses for these outrageous and many times treacherous agendas.

Let’s take a break from all this and go watch McAllister play Kissee face with his help.

        • mikem42

Horrible things you say? Like ending two wars, lowering the deficit, lowering unemployment, providing health care insurance to the previously uninsured. All the while dealing with a party of no (Republicans) who stated that their goal was to make Obama a one term president. Didn’t work, but that didn’t stop them. All they have is Benghazi, and that didn’t prove to be a scandal either.

          • CE

Can you really stick your head in the sand that deeply? Obama bombed Libya without Congressional approval, introduced signature strikes where we kill people without even knowing who they are, refused to prosecute people that he admits are guilty of torture, ran Fast and Furious, etc. There are plenty of scandals to mire his legacy if your yardstick is the law and the Constitution.

You’re free to like his domestic agenda if you wish. But I don’t see the connection…

          • mikem42

Are you thinking of the bombing in 1986 ordered by Ronald Reagan and carried out by the USA? Maybe the bombing in 2011 which was a coalition under the flag of the United Nations, which pales in comparison to the ill conceived war on Iraq, which still lingers at a horrible cost to life and treasure. Fast and furious was a Bush program of course. Torture, well check out Cheney and Rumsfeld for that. You forgot Benghazi, another non scandal. Get real.

          • CE

I’m not a Bush apologist, nor am I a Republican. I just want the rule of law, regardless of the party in power. Don’t you?

          • mikem42

Noone said you were either, but you did accuse the current president of things that he in fact bears no responsibility for. If you are mad, okay. But be factual and look for the real culprits when placing blame for the various wrongs committed.

          • CE

I accused Obama of very specific things, none of which have anything to do with anyone else but himself:

            1) Obama bombs Libya without congressional approval:
            http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/22/world/africa/22powers.html?_r=0

            2) Obama introduces “targeted” killing based on algorithms, not specific intelligence a.k.a signature strikes (debatable, as Bush did similar things in 2008, but this expanded under Obama):
            http://www.propublica.org/article/everything-we-know-so-far-about-drone-strikes

            3) Obama fails to prosecute people he says are guilty of torture:
            http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/04/24/724213/-Obama-DOJ-Request-Torture-Immunity-For-Bush-Admin#

            4) Obama ran Fast and Furious:
            http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/09/president-obama-falsely-claims-fast-and-furious-program-begun-under-the-previous-administration/

These claims do not stem from anger, but from fact. Obama alone is responsible for his behavior.

    • Antiguashores

You’re lying about a lot of things plus you had to bring in Obama race, yes it’s true republicans are racist.

While the crisis in the Ukraine, is newsworthy and important, let us not forget the more than two million unemployed workers, and their families, who had loss their benefits last December, still waiting for the Unemployment Extension Bill to pass in the senate. Since late last December, the Republicans have dragged their feet, and have put off passing the bill, while millions of families have been suffering on account of it. For the first time in many years, the senate failed to extend the benefits for the unemployed, leaving these poor families to suffer eviction, home foreclosures, bankruptcy, and homelessness. Even though the congress quickly approved of Billions of dollars in aid for the Ukraine. How is this possible? How can the republicans justify spending Billions of tax payer’s dollars on foreign aid, yet refuse to help poor Americans at home? These workers were not asking for something that they haven’t already paid into over the course of their working years. These families need help, and need it now. If our country can use tax payer’s money to Bailout Huge Corporations, they should be also capable of giving assistance to those who have worked for it. The problem isn’t with the poor and unemployed in this country, but with the government spending billions of dollars on Corporate welfare and corporation bailouts. What happened after all those bailouts?? The CEO’S rewarded themselves with huge bonuses on the tax payer’s tab. That was the thanks we received from Corporate America for our help. The Republican Party likes to represent their party as being the party for “family values”. But where are their values? Charity should begin at home, and it’s been too long now that these unemployed Americans have been suffering, Senators such as John Boehner, have shown their contempt for the poor and less advantaged in this country, and in the coming elections in 2016, the Republican Party will realize their mistake in not supporting these two million unemployed workers.

    • mikem42

Good post, but I think they gave up on that “family values” thing. Too many got caught tapping toes in the toilet stall, or in little black books, or caught on video tape cheating on their wife. No, they don’t have family values, only their own pockets and jobs are they worried about.

  • semby

    The racists are the democrats.
Using African Americans to play politics is racist and disgusting.

    • Antiguashores

With frinds like duck dynasty it says a lot about the republican party, show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are..African Americans knows what racism is all about that’s why they chose the democratic party because the ones suppressing their votes and livlihoods today are those like you and the republican party. That’s why republicans lose to blacks, hispanics, women .gays etc. ever damn time and it’s not just about blacks folks

      • Jack Everett

A great example of republican thinking is how they are going to close the rest rooms in a democratic county in Florida on election day. These fools are so filled with hate they think it’s a normal condition.

      • Layla

Not anymore they don’t…..if I were you, I’d take a good look at current voter rolls. The times, they are a changing for African Americans.

  • ShadrachSmith

You report hate speech like that as news.
    Shame.

  • levi

Do you realize you really can make $5000 per week trading? I would have never believed it until I saw it for myself or I started doing it. And that’s exactly what happened to me because now I’m making that much money. You just need to know the right place to learn and where I went to is a website called Gold Trading Academy, you should be able to find them on Google or just search for them. Their support is the best I’ve ever seen on any website before and they helped me to learn to trade, and it was nowhere near as hard as I thought it would be.

    • Jack Everett

Do you prostitute for Wall Street also?

  • dangerclose

“Elements of Republican Base ‘Animated By Racism’” Is this really even a question? This is “the elephant in the room” in American politics and has only been exasperated by the election of America’s first black President.

  • docb

A LARGE portion of the gop bag base! FIXED it…

  • bpai99

That’s a Blinding Glimpse of the Obvious by Israel. Not all GOPers are racists of course, but GOP candidates rely on the support of racists to win elections. Therefore, they don’t strongly denounce racist comments by their supporters. Times like this are when Barry Goldwater is most missed.

If there’s a more racist state than the state of Israel, I don’t know what it is.

  • Layla

Never have I been so insulted and disappointed by the comments continuing to come out of Congress at those who disagree with their policies.

  • voltaic

GOP primary voter is 95% white and 70% old. Old white people don’t like anything but white people. Animated by racism is quite accurate. You didn’t hear minorities saying anything about Mitt Romney’s father being born in Mexico. You don’t hear minorities saying that Ted Cruz should be deported because he was born outside US. GOP isn’t just animated by racism, it is racism.

  • james Barro

Rep. Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, …said Sunday “not all” of his Republican colleagues are racist. Steve is a jerk…when did you stop beating you wife Steve?

  • conservativechick

Elements of the Democrat base are “animated by totalitarianism” Harry Reid is “animated by pedophilia” – making unfounded accusations for fun and profit is easy! You can do it to!

The easiest way to tell if one side is losing an argument or a debate is to watch and see if they are resorting to name-calling.

  • mabramso

Why are Democrat politicians so obsessed with race? Can’t Israel find any other way of expressing frustration over the upcoming elections?

    • Jack Everett

When your racism fits wear it.

        Or project it.
