Jason Mraz to Perform at LA Fundraiser for House Hopeful

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Jason Mraz will headline an upcoming fundraiser for author Marianne Williamson, an independent running for Congress in California’s 33rd District.

The $500-a-head fundraiser will be held Feb. 23 at a private residence in Malibu.

Mraz, who knew Williamson before she announced her bid for Congress, is not being paid to perform at the event, according to Williamson’s campaign.

“He’s a supporter of the campaign and he wanted to participate in some way, so he agreed to do a performance at this fundraiser,” said Ileana Wachtel, a spokeswoman for Williamson’s campaign.

Williamson, a well-known self-help author, is one of a handful of candidates seeking to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Henry A. Waxman in this Los Angeles-based district. The district includes the wealthy areas of Malibu, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, and is chock-full of famous residents.

Three Democrats are currently seeking the seat. They are former Los Angeles Controller Wendy Greuel, state Sen. Ted Lieu and Matt Miller, a radio host and former aide to President Bill Clinton.

Veteran and Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity President Elan Carr is the only Republican currently in the field.

Another independent, documentary filmmaker Brent Roske, is also running for the seat.

Other candidates could enter the race in the coming days. They have until March 7 to file the necessary paperwork for a bid. A top-two primary, in which the two highest vote recipients advance, regardless of party, will be held June 3.

California’s 33rd District is rated a Safe Democrat contest by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.
