Steve King Challenger: Congressman Is ‘Mean-Spirited’ | #IA04

The candidate: Veteran Jim Mowrer, a Democrat
The member: Mowrer is challenging Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa.
The district: Iowa’s 4th District is rated Safe Republican by the Rothenberg Political Report/CQ Roll Call. The district is located in northwest Iowa and is the largest geographically of the state’s four House districts.
The candidate’s team: Ben Nesselhuf (campaign manager), Andrew Feldman (communications), Revolution Media (media), New Blue Interactive (digital media)

Veteran Jim Mowrer, a Democrat, called Rep. Steve King’s recent controversial comments on immigration “mean-spirited” and argued he would be a better fit for the Hawkeye State’s most conservative House district.

In a recent interview at CQ Roll Call’s office, Mowrer said it was hard to find humor in King’s comments, such as when he referred to the children of immigrants with “calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”

“I think in some cases, if they’re just silly, they can be more humorous,” Mowrer said last week. “But I think too many times his comments are mean-spirited and divisive and it’s really hard to find too much humor in them.”

Mowrer faces an uphill battle unseating King. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney carried the 4th District with 53 percent in 2012.

But Mowrer says his deep ties to the district and his military background will convince voters to eschew party ID and vote for him in 2014.

“I was born and raised on a farm in the 4th District, so I’m a lifelong resident of the district,” Mowrer said. “I’ve got a farming background and I’ve spent my entire life serving Iowa and my country, whether it was serving in the Iowa National Guard and deploying to Iraq, or working at the Pentagon to save taxpayer dollars. I’ve got a record of service and getting the job done; I think that we need more of that in Congress.”

This series questions the scores of congressional hopefuls who visit the CQ Roll Call offices each cycle. Responses and questions in the video have been edited and condensed. Have a question for a candidate? Follow us at @RollCallPols to learn about upcoming interviews.

Representative Steve King is not only “mean spirited” he is outright mentally unstable. King and his ilk are a detriment to the freedom of all Americans and must be voted out of office–that goes for all other Tea Party zealots, especially governors. They are even making a mockery out of sensible, moderate Republicans. And those who are fooled by them will eventually become their victims. “Life can turn on a dime” for anyone of us at any given time, and you can be damn sure that the T.P. extremists will force you to pick yourselves up by your own boot straps!

      Geee,what a proggie nut case!

  • Wynstone

Steve King is just not capable of rational thought when it comes to government’s treatment of non-whites. This alone should disqualify him from the country’s leadership. During debate on the House floor, he said a settlement of a USDA discrimination lawsuit with black farmers was “slave reparations”. If he couldn’t separate the facts of the case from his own ideological bias, he can’t be trusted to approach any issue logically.

  • Benjamin Dover

To preserve freedom, we must understand that democratic processes cannot alone guarantee the security of life, liberty, and property.

yep. you got me. encapsulated perfectly what everyone already knows… your entire political philosophy is based on racism. i thought your guy’s talking points taught you to hide it better with things like “states rights”… you have have said i was a “super example of the need for states rights”

          • camdenme2

Just remember, father knows better than you proggies!

          • greggersmd

of course you do daddy. whats worse, knowing obama is president or knowing there is nothing you can do about it?

          • camdenme2

Let me see. There’s a Sherwin Williams about 5 miles away, but no trailer parks in this county. I have no need for paint ,but you proggies are painting up a storm! Pick a new color!

          • greggersmd

lol. youre the one who chose red. how bout you decide what you want first, then get back to me. and while youre at it, please answer my question. what annoys you more, the fact that Obama is president or the fact that you cant do anything about it =)

          • camdenme2

            Your pres chose the color!

          • greggersmd

I’m confused. you said u would paint a new red line. red. as in red. as in the color red. red. lol. then u said pick a new color. you did. new color. new. lol. I know u white trash like to blame nobama for all the worlds ills, but maybe you should take a little bit of personal responsibility on this one. or is the lead paint in ur trailer going to ur head?

  • pekin

Caterpillar23; Keep drinking the Kool Aid….Dems wouldn’t win elections without bribes, threats from IRS, and “targeting” certain groups….So when it all comes down, WE THE PEOPLE, will save YOUR sorry A@@, also!

    • greggersmd

why stop at the irs? don’t ya know obummer/nobama/socialist/sanfransicsovaluesliberal/chicagostylepolitics president also personally flew out to libya and killed a ambasador stevens.

  • pekin

OH, I thought that Rollcall was fair & balanced….sort of like the Des Moines RAG…

  • Defend Liberty

As Tocqueville observed, individualist principles and democratic processes are diametrically opposed to the centralized control and plunder of the collectivists.

    • greggersmd

oh god. you continue with your word salads.

      • Defend Liberty

They’re fair points, one and all.

        • greggersmd

          not really.

  • Benjamin Dover

Since the liberty used by the few willing to take advantage of it is more important than any freedom we all might use, to restrict liberty to that which all might use is a fatal mistake.
