The League of Conservation Voters has launched a $1 million ad campaign across five states, including two battleground House districts and two competitive Senate races.
The group, which backs candidates who support its environmental policy goals, is running television ads praising Sens. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, and Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., as well as Reps. Pete Gallego, D-Texas, and Scott Peters, D-Calif., “for protecting public health and promoting clean energy jobs.”
Hagan is a top target of national Republicans, while Schatz is involved in a competitive primary. Gallego and Peters both defeated Republican incumbents in 2012. Reid is not up for re-election until 2016.
“These environmental allies are standing up to the tea party and working across the aisle to help break the gridlock in Washington,” LCV President Gene Karpinski said in a statement.
The five ads, which began running Thursday, were tailored for the individual states and districts. Hagan, who represents a Republican-leaning state, was thanked for standing up “with members of both parties” to push for a reduction in mercury pollution.
Peters, a freshman in a tossup district in San Diego, was thanked for voting “against tea party efforts to gut the Clean Water Act.” That’s a vitally important issue in this coastal district where the connection with the ocean runs deep. Just more than $300,000 of the overall buy was spent here.
