Lindsey Graham Backs Mark Sanford #SC01 #SCSEN
Posted at 12:43 p.m. on May 1, 2013
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., endorsed former Gov. Mark Sanford in the special election for South Carolina’s 1st District.
The endorsement from the Palmetto State’s senior senator came in the form of a series of tweets from Graham’s campaign Twitter account on Wednesday morning.
In Congress, @marksanfordwill vote to cut wasteful spending, eliminate debt & make gov't work for the taxpayer. We need him in Washington.— Lindsey Graham (@LindseyGrahamSC) May 1, 2013
Another tweet came off as a veiled shot at the National Republican Congressional Committee’s decision to abandon Sanford in the race:
The bottom line is that no Republican or conservative independent can afford to sit on the sidelines for this race. #sc1— Lindsey Graham (@LindseyGrahamSC) May 1, 2013
This is a safe Republican district, but Democrats have made serious political and financial investments in his rival, nominee Elizabeth Colbert Busch.
Many national Republicans disowned Sanford’s campaign after his former wife accused him of trespassing on her property. These Republicans reasoned Sanford could embarrass the party if they wasted resources and he lost, or more unflattering personal drama was revealed.
But in the last week, some Republicans and conservatives have come to Sanford’s aid. Besides Graham, former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and FreedomWorks have also offered their supported.
