Mia Love Clinches GOP Nomination for Congress

Mia Love Clinches GOP Nomination for Congress

Former Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love earned ample support from Utah Republicans on Saturday to win her party’s nod for the House — and most likely become the GOP’s first black congresswoman.

One of the GOP’s most-touted prospects, Love received 78 percent of the delegate votes and put away the nomination at this year’s state Republican convention, according to the Deseret News. Her primary rival, businessman Bob Fuehr, garnered about 22 percent of the vote.

In Utah, GOP candidates who meet a 60 percent threshold at the convention can bypass a June primary. The all-day convention took place in Sandy, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City.

Love is running to succeed her former foe, retiring Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah. Matheson announced his retirement late last year — a departure that all but certainly threw the seat into the GOP’s column

The race is rated Safe Republican by the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

Last cycle, Mitt Romney won Utah’s 4th District by a 37-point margin. That same year, Matheson defeated Love by 768 votes.

Love’s convention victory will likely bolster the party’s image with women and minorities.

It is also a second win in one day for Project GROW, a program created to help female GOP candidates. Earlier on Saturday, state Del. Barbara Comstock won the Republican nomination for a competitive House district in northern Virginia.

Earlier this week, the project had a setback in a Florida special election.

  • DizzyGrandma662

Congratulations Mia!! I only wish you represented me in MA. You will be a great representative for your district.

    • rightwingrick

You think someone who says there’s no discrimination is really all that smart?

    • Roberto M

I wish she did too, Grandma. I honestly can’t stand that whinny Obama bot, Lizardbreath Warren.

  • don76550

Of course the liberal black RACISTS of the congressional black caucus will be outraged by her presence. Unlike them she does not hate our country or our bill of rights, she is not a marxist liar.

    • Sally

Oh dear. I think the Congressional Black Caucus will welcome her. Liberals are not liars, not marxist, and unlike the GOP, actually want what’s best for the entire country, not just millionaire CEOs. Of course, she has to win first.

      • GoldBeachBiker

        What?

      • pantherjad

No they won’t. They didn’t welcome Allen West and they don’t welcome republicans generally. I know, I worked for congress and have firsthand knowledge and experience and the experiences of many GOP members of congress. Black republicans are NOT welcomed warmly in the congressional black caucus. Her presence will make waves–good waves, revealing waves.

        • Charles Wolf

          Alan West is a crackpot.

          • GoldBeachBiker

That makes Barry an idiot, marxist empty-suit.

          • Caribou “PAYCUT” Barbie™

            Who is Barry?

          • GoldBeachBiker

            Barry is Obama’s first name

          • rightwingrick

You mean the Harvard graduate who headed the Harvard Law Review and taught Constitutional Law at one of our most prestigious research Universities? That idiot? Let’s hear all about your tremendous qualifications, then. Where would that put you on the list?

          • GoldBeachBiker

Yeah, that one. The constitutional lecturer who no one from Harvard knew, who’s birth certificate has been sealed up with a complicit liberal cheerleading media, the one who is destroying America’s economy through redistribution of its assets to illegals and welfare scams, the one who’s foreign policy is the laughing stock of the world …. yeah, that one.

          • http://ndgoon.blogspot.com/ Goon’s ND Redneck

Sounds like no one knew Barry at Columbia too.

          • rightwingrick

Delusional, and can’t see facts. Many people have commented on their time at Harvard with Obama, all documented. The Republican Governor of Hawaii has seen the certificate, and confirmed it is real, documented. Welfare scams have been studied thoroughly, and the welfare scam rate hovers between 2% and 3% and has for years, documented in separate studies. Just a few examples. The data is in front of your face, but if you chose to ignore it, that just make you (complete the sentence)…..

          • GoldBeachBiker

Pick and choose, ricky, it is you who is delusional! Progressivism is going down.

          • http://ndgoon.blogspot.com/ Goon’s ND Redneck

Really, Allan West is a great American.

      • don76550

You are absolutely clueless. To black liberal politicians, any black conservative is an Uncle Tom, an idiot , a traitor and so on. Liberals are indeed marxists and liars and only an anti American useful idiot would think otherwise,

        • rightwingrick

And once again, we see the pot calling the kettle black. Hilarious nonsense.

          • GoldBeachBiker

            @rightwingrick, back to your mommy’s basement …

          • rightwingrick

HILARIOUS!!!! Lets try another one….some people can’t see the forest for the trees (let me explain….no matter how obvious, some people can’t see what’s right in front of them). Look in the mirror.

      • GoldBeachBiker

Sally, odds are 3 to 1 Mia wins; why is it that liberals don’t like conservative African-Americans? Is it …… because you’re racist?

    • Ryan Darby

I don’t think they’ll really care about Mia Love one way or the other.

    • Mike

You should talk to you doctor about drug interactions as your medications appear to have some very severe side-effects.

    • rightwingrick

So you think the black caucus hates America, and they are all Marxist liars? I have an idea, why don’t we group people in bunches, say they are “all the same,” and call them names. That used to be called racism and bigotry, but I’m not sure what it’s called now.

  • Layla

    Awesome news! Congratulations, Mia!

    • chattyone

      Go get ‘em Mia

  • terjeanderson

“Love’s convention victory will likely bolster the party’s image with women and minorities.”

Yeah, just like Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin, Christine O’Donnell and Sharron Angle bolstered Republicans’ image with women, or Allen West or Ted Cruz bolstered their image with minorities.

Republicans’ image with women and minorities isn’t going to be bolstered simply by nominating one African-American woman to the US House to join their overwhelmingly white, male and far right caucus. Their problem isn’t the race or gender of their messengers – it is their message. A party determined to protect the interests of the wealthy and powerful at the expense of working, poor and middle-class Americans is out of touch.

Women and minorities vote for Democrats (and against Republicans) because they understand who best represents their needs and their views – and Love’s convention victory is going to have zero impact on that reality.

    • GoldBeachBiker

Sorry, terjaroo, this time Dems go down. The Senate is history. Oh, btw, thanks for going nuclear, there’s no tellin what we’ll do now to get even.

    • louisiana_mom

I understand who best represents MY needs and views… and it is NOT the Democrats. I am more than my lady parts and I have more concerns than getting pregnant! I want to be respected not demeaned down to my reproductive parts. The Republicans respect me as a whole person, not just my “lady parts”! Take your BS and shove it! Real women know exactly which party represents their views… only silly little girls who think sex is the be all of their being vote Democrat as they watch their job opportunities shrink, gas prices increase, electric bills necessarily skyrocket…

      • blfdjlj

Republicans respect you so much! In addition to taking away your reproductive rights, they block equal pay legislation, hold up the Violence Against Women Act, refuse to raise the minimum wage, and refuse to prosecute rape strongly.

        http://rhrealitycheck.org/article/2014/04/17/republicans-democrats-wrong-war-women/

The reason why Republicans consistently lose the female vote is not just because of one stupid comment Todd Akin made, but because GOP policies as a whole are repugnant to women.

        • louisiana_mom

No one is taking away your “reproductive rights”… you have the right to purchase whatever birth control you want.. I just don’t want to pay for YOUR sex life and I don’t want the government involved in mine. If the government provides birth control it puts them in my sex life! We already have laws against violence so we need to enforce existing laws, not make new ones! That is wasting precious time and resources. Increasing minimum wage would just increase the price everyone would pay for every product, thus giving people like me who make more than minimum wage a pay cut… which is the goal, to hurt the middle class (men and women)….

No the only ones waging war on women, is the Democrats with their war on the middle class and treating me like I’m nothing more than a brain dead walking lady part!

          • Ryan Darby

Regarding minimum wage; then why does Australia have a comparable unemployment rate to America’s, instead of a much higher one (their min wage is $15)? And why are their prices not twice as much. If your “min wage costs jobs and raises prices” point were true, Australia would be doing badly. They are not.

          • louisiana_mom

I don’t give a damm what they do in Australia…. I don’t live there. If you think it is so wonderful, move.

          • Ryan Darby

Oh, I don’t care for Australia either. I just wanted to point out that minimum wage does not mean “economy killer” like you seem to be pointing out.

          • louisiana_mom

Every time minimum wage goes up, so does the prices of goods and services so these businesses can meet their new higher payroll expense… when prices goes up, those who did not get an increase then have less available cash to spend… and those who did get the minimum wage increase are no better off because they too have to pay the new prices and many of the minimum wage employees are laid off by companies who cannot pay the new increase… yeah… sounds wonderful… in your Progressive Utopian Alternate Reality…

I am so glad that Islam is going to rule over your mind and body soon.

    • Ronda

Hey Terjeanderson, how many African-American women are running on the Dumocrats side?

      • terjeanderson

        Hey Rhonda

There are already 16 African-American Democratic women in Congress – all of whom are running for re-election.

        • http://marketsharescorp.com/ Nick10

          Take that dumboRonda.

      • Ryan Darby

Actually, in the Utah state legislature, there is an African-American woman running for state house on the Democratic side, Sandra Hollins. In fact, her seat is safer for the Dems than Love’s will be for the Republicans.

    • red_tide

This is what you party really stands for: Donald (Tokowitz ) Sterling.

  • rightwingrick

Mia Love has stated that African Americans in Congress say there is discrimination “when there isn’t any.” I’m not sure where she’s coming from on that, but if she’s that naïve, it scares me.

    • GoldBeachBiker

      You scare me

      • rightwingrick

        Because?????

        • GoldBeachBiker

because you are an idiot, a delusional idiot

  • Raz Matazz

Without the buffers of private property and free enterprise, collectivist charlatans are more easily able to force people to chase superstitions such as “social justice”.

What does this have to do with Youtah?

  • Wise words …

Since plunder stalls progress, it leads to even more demands to redistribute even more wealth, thus accelerating the downward spiral.

You are pretty funny. I’ll stack my background and accomplishments and intellect up against yours ANY day. ANY day. And you wouldn’t even come close. Your bullying and name calling means nothing.

    • GoldBeachBiker

you’re funnier, ricky. on the downward slide you are.

  • YONATAN C

The Republican party has done a huge disservice to itself, for taking the position against the unemployment extension bill in the senate. With 2.6 Million angry potential voters having been affected by their refusal to pass the bill; the coming election will prove to be the Republican’s downfall. These families were left hung out to dry since late last December, and they will not forget the anguish that they have suffered because of it. Many of these families have become ruined financially, they have witnessed their credit being destroyed, they have faced evictions, home foreclosures, personal bankruptcy, and homelessness. How can they not forget which party was at fault for this? The Republicans have been using these families for political leverage, and bargaining chips, to further their party’s political agenda. They have shown their party’s true distain for the Average American family, and the suffering that these families have been going through being jobless without benefits to support their children. Senators like John Boehner are what makes the Republican party look bad in the people’s eyes. As a “FORMER” Republican of many years, I can honestly say that I will NEVER vote for another Republican again, and actively persuade my friends and family not to likewise. The Republican party will find itself VOTED OUT in the next election
