Senate Republicans are using a classic video game and tonight’s season premiere of “Duck Dynasty” to target Sen. Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., in their campaign arm’s first televised ad of the midterm election cycle.
The ad, obtained first by CQ Roll Call, utilizes Nintendo’s “Duck Hunt” game, familiar to kids of the 1980s. Titled “Misfire,” the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s spot says Landrieu has “bad aim” when it comes to issues such as “health care, energy, taxes and jobs.”
It will air only in New Orleans during the first episode of the Louisiana-based A&E reality show Wednesday night, as well as next week’s episode. Watch “Misfire” here:
The targeted TV ad buy is just one part of a congressional recess campaign to connect with voters in states where Democratic incumbents are seeking re-election.
The NRSC plans to use phones, billboards, push cards and walk days, plus Web videos and a social media push, to target incumbents in Alaska, Arkansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire and North Carolina, plus House members running in Iowa and Michigan. It’s also launching a mock app store website, where Democratic candidates are separated by category and each has a separate page with descriptions and reviews.
“Throughout August, the NRSC is connecting directly with folks from Alaska to North Carolina, reminding them that Democrats have turned their backs on women, families and workers by embracing President Obama’s job stifling agenda,” NRSC spokeswoman Brook Hougesen said in a statement.
Last week, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee kicked off an online ad campaign to draw attention to the Republican primaries playing out in states across the country. Democrats hope the primaries produce flawed or weakened GOP nominees, as they did in several races over the last couple of cycles.
Republicans need a net gain of six seats to capture the Senate majority in 2014.
