Virginia: Tim Kaine, George Allen Release Ads Ahead of Debate

Set to face each other in their fourth debate tonight, former Govs. George Allen (R) and Tim Kaine (D) each released television ads today that push the central messages of their respective Senate campaigns.

Kaine, who served as lieutenant governor when Sen. Mark Warner (D) was governor, has stressed on the campaign trail that he’s the candidate who would be willing to work across the aisle to help get a gridlocked Senate working again. Warner, a member of the bipartisan “gang of six” and possibly the most popular politician in the state, has joined Kaine on a few tours around the Old Dominion to serve as an example of the kind of Senator voters can expect Kaine to be.

His latest ad features the two standing in front of the state Capitol in Richmond. “We were a great team in Richmond,” Warner says, before Kaine adds, “And we’ll be a great team in Washington.”

Allen’s ad, a contrast spot, touches on the most vital theme of his campaign — that he, not Kaine, would help the economy grow and create jobs. The ad also again attempts to tie Kaine to the looming defense cuts.

Kaine and Allen are running for the seat of retiring Sen. Jim Webb (D), who defeated Allen in 2006. Roll Call rates the race as a Tossup.

The debate, sponsored by the Virginia chapters of the League of Women Voters and AARP, begins at 8 p.m. It’s being televised on broadcast stations across the state, as well as nationally on C-SPAN.

They last debated Sept. 20 in Northern Virginia. Their final debate is Oct. 18.
