Updated 9:42 a.m. | Former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine just recorded his best fundraising quarter of the cycle, bringing in around $3 million from April through June, his Senate campaign announced this morning.

The ex-Democratic National Committee chairman is running in a blockbuster race against Republican George Allen, a former governor and Senator.

Kaine had $2.7 million left in cash on hand as of June 30 and has already purchased $3.5 million in fall TV airtime.

Kaine’s second-quarter total includes the pre-primary fundraising the Democrat previously announced. Kaine, who had no opposition in the June 12 primary, raised $1.2 million from April 1 to May 23.

Roll Call rates this race as a Tossup.

Allen, who won a contested GOP primary, announced later this morning that he raised more than $2 million in the second quarter, leaving him with more than $3.3 million in cash on hand. He raised $751,000 during the pre-primary period. Allen has not purchased any fall airtime yet, as Kaine has, but he is expected to have reserved about $3.4 million worth of airtime by the end of this week.
